F31 Geometry
As my previous post, I had the rack replaced under warranty for the knocking issue, as part of this the paperwork reports that the dealer also did a 4 wheel alignment.
I now seem to have a bit of an issue. The steering has no feel in the dead ahead position and it all feels a bit twitchy. At 10 -20mph the steering is so light that you would think you were steering on ice, no feel / feedback at all. Steering also doesn't seem to centre as well as it did, sometimes with a slight pull to the left and sometimes to the right. Does anyone know what the alignment settings are supposed to be? I know with some of my other cars manufacturers have a tolerance +or- x amount and it could be + one side & - the other which created all sorts of issues. I'm booking it back in for a check but would be good to have some info to hand, if anyone knows. |

Is the steering wheel exactly central when going straight while there is no road camber influence?
Re the geometry, toe settings can be the problem, nothing else should be changed with a new rack. Toe may be in tolerance, but could be tweaked to reduce and/or get rid of a twitchy feel. Or it is due to the rack/software change. |

Steering wheel is on straight, but if you turn it slightly to the right or left it heads off in that direction whereas before it would return to ahead position (obviously dependent on road and extent of camber) Tried it in the centre lane of the A1 yesterday no much camber there. Certainly feels as if too much toe in, seems very keen to dart off one way or the other. Could be as the Teaston said or software as they did give it a complete update, lost some settings and some reverted to factory, got nice maps update though! I'll see what they say. Thanks |

I also recently had my steering rack replaced under warranty. The new rack is not the same as the previous one. In fact there have been a significant number of part number changes along the way over the last 3 years.
Having driven a more recent car my new rack behaves largely like the ones fitted to recently produced cars. |

After my rack replacement a week ago, the car seems to steer as normal, but feels very light in Eco-Pro mode (forgive me - I was running low on diesel!), but with normal weight in comfort.
Could the new rack have different assist levels for different modes? I certainly never noticed it with the original rack. |

Well took the tech guy out in it today, he drove, I explained - Response was 'seems fine to me, they're all like this, probably your winter tyres seeing as their non runflat'.
Having explained that these wheels/tyres were used last winter and in a recent 1600 mile trip to Germany a couple of weeks ago, before coming in for warranty work and new rack and all was fine then, their response was, well bring it in and we'll check it all. Back in next week so will see. Perhaps as mentioned above the hardware has changed from my original so this is how they are now hope not though. |
