340I exhuast noise on start up

Can anyone tell me how or what makes the exhaust louder and fruitier on start up on the 340i than it is in when sport mode / flap mod done?

In another thread it was mentioned that the turbo wastegate is held open on startup to help the catalytic converters get up to working temperature quickly.

Our 320i seems to exhibit the same behaviour.

Was curious as to what else would adding to the warm up noise - wastegate makes sense, thanks!

The 340i is pretty stupid on startup, MPPSK makes it a little louder but not hugely IMO.

My 320i sounds like it had a big hole in the exhaust, it disappears after few minutes

I did a muffler and resonator delete on my 340 and I love cold starts, especially when I do it at school and make all the alarms go off lol..

I had a similar nagging doubt but it does seem to be by design.

It's to do with the car needing to warm the cat up quickly. As my engine engineer mate told me, they retard the ignition for a short period of time and pump extra fuel into the engine so that it burns late, and slightly into the exhaust manifold. Not very efficient in itself but worth it on balance to preheat the cat

It may be because it's in a garage and the sound is echoing but it just sounds like there's a hole in the exhaust :

I love the noise on start up and then it settles down to a disappointingly quiet sound
