M240i Service

Hi, I read that you should service your m240i at 1200 miles like the M2.

Has anyone else heard this?

Either the iDrive or owners manual wil have what BMW covers and recommends.

If your trying to determine what 'enthusiast' think is best for performance/longevity then engine-oil and transmission/differential oil changes are items that are oftener mentioned.

Do you have a smaller then the owners manual booklet titled. 'Service and WARRANTY INFORMATION' ? Came with documentation and will have your car model on the epigraph page

M240i according to BMW is 10k intervals and no breakin oil change necessary so they won't do a free one until 10k miles. However, i'd still recommend it. Changing the oil early doesn't hurt the engine, just costs you money is all and if $50-70 now saves you 20k (cost of new motor) down the road, then why not do it. I just did my initial oil change at 1700 miles in my m240i. Didn't do tranny or diff change, though I probably should, because those ones I'd expect to be much more than $50-70 because I've never done those myself.

I asked about the break in service when I was close to 1200 miles on my m235 and was told service/oil change is not necessary until 10000 miles and if I wanted to have it done would have to pay out of pocket. A friend of mine did it at a stand alone BMW shop for around 70 bucks. Could be worth it if you track your car or plan to keep it long term

Like pedped88 mentioned, any service rep and mechanic will officially tell you break in service isn't needed on the 2 series with the exception of the m2. My SA told me the same thing. Also, my car still says 8k miles till service due every time I get into the car as a reminder for the 10k mile service.

Also as he mentioned, if you track your car or plan too, doing 5k intervals would help keep good oil in it all the time. Same thing goes if you want to keep it long term, like over 100k miles and not have to worry about your engine being gummed up with sludge (also using a good full synthetic will avoid sludge).

Joe 240 great answer.

In the uk I have the service inclusive 5 year/ 50K as I did with my last z4 28 msport. I only keep for 4 years max and less than 50K so any issues will not really bother me and I extend the warty for the final year. The zd I ran it in, i.e nothing abot 4.5K revs for 1.2K miles. Had no issues and was the best car so far, if it began o eat oil then it would have been covered.

Now my new M240i has popped 1.2K. I kept it in eco mode and no kick down or over 4K revs (well just a few times I may of had a feel in sport mode) but most was steady below 80 mph and 4K.
I don't track or plan to or tune up so I will do exactly what BMW say. In the uk its 18K (depending on how you drive). I am used to changing oil, filter and sparks at less than 10K some 20 years ago but things have come a long way same as the lubricants and manufacture. Some say that dropping too early also causes damage with new synthetics, as they are just bedding in as the engine. The M2 is a different overbost engine and track car, M240 has a better engine.
Previous cars have been over 1 year old and never knew what people did and never have had an engine issue.

Check the idrive when each item is due and that is when its due.

Just for the record, £475 up front payment before 60 days after reg this is what a 50K 5 year service inclusive saves.

Oil & Micro-filter service £293.03 due at 2 years or approx 16-18,000 miles

Brake Fluid service £111.56 due at 3 years old

Vehicle Check service £112.50 due at 3 years or approx 35,000 miles

Oil & Micro-filter service, Air Filter & Spark Plug service £609.61 due at 4 years or approx 32-36,000 miles

Oil & Micro-filter service £293.03 Dependent on mileage. Would normally be 16/18,000 miles after previous Oil Service.

Engine oil top ups As per warning light

Pretty sure the primary reasons for the M2 break in service are actually the reset of the computer to enable some more performance and changing the rear diff fluid, of course it doesn't hurt to change oil at the same time which is why I believe they do it but I don't know of any other N55 that requires an oil change at the 1200 mile break in point.

I drove my e90 215,000 miles and it is still running great with its new owner, I only changed the oil at the required intervals because I drove a lot of highway miles. If I had an M240i I would probably do an initial oil change before 10k and then just stick with the normal intervals unless I was doing a fair amount of track days.
