Warning Light - Intermittent - Ideas?

Bit of question on this one. Tried Googling, but can't seem to get a definitive answer.

Started the car yesterday, and immediately had a warning light come on. It was the car on ramp, which the check control showed the exclamation mark in the circle - both in yellow.

Got home, let the car stand. Started it, it didn't come on.

However, driving this morning - after about 10 minutes, 'beep' - it's back. Driving home, initially ok again, but once again, within 5-10 mins, it was there.

Checked brake lights, all good.

I'm guessing it could be brake pads/sensors? It was MOT'd a month ago, and nothing was flagged up then - and I've only covered under 500 miles since.

I can't understand why it's not coming on (bar the first time) as soon as I start up the car. It's a late (facelifted) 2007 330i.

Must add that the on board computer shows that no service items are due for a long while yet. Thousands of miles, and at least 12 months.

Any ideas on this?

I have the exact same thing. Randomly, will get the car on the ramp in yellow. Also, have the little triangle that comes and goes randomly. It will be on for ten seconds while driving then just goes away. Nothing is due either. Strange.

Booked it in to the garage on Wednesday for a check. Hope I'm panicking unnecessarily, but it's not wise to take chance on the braking system of any car, let alone a 330!

Out of interest, once the possible offending pads and sensors are replaced, that should stop the warning - ie no other reset required?

I think I had something similar recently. It was for the inspection time.

I thought a brake issue would show from the off....bit funny it takes a while to show each time.

Brake pad servicing is thousands of miles away on the CBC as well.

Please provide a more exact description of the symbol which you see...the E90 does NOT have a simple 'circle with exclamation'! The only symbols used in the E90 with a circular outer form are
  1. Circle with exterior cogs (representing a gear!), indicating transmission related issue
  2. Circle flanked by 'parentheses' to either side, indicating a braking system issue
  3. Counterclockwise partial circle with arrowhead, with inner triangle, indicating a DTS/DSC issue

A symbol display is very likely going to have a CCID code stored, which you can display by using the BC control on the directional control stalk, then pressing inward on the end button for two seconds at the message.

Thanks Wilt, great info.

It's definitely a '2'. Manual lists it as brake pads.

I'm hoping it might just be a dodge sensor (the CBS tells me a change is due thousands of miles away...unless it been changed...!) as it comes on intermittently. When I start it's off, but within 10 or so minutes it comes on and stays on. I can guarantee I could turn off the ignition right after, and it would need a another period of driving before it returns.

I've avoided using the car over the weekend, as it's not booked in to the garage until Wednesday. Only trip planned is to the bodyshop (about 5 mins away) where it's booked in for a tiny bump repair. Next trip is the garage for examination.

As mentioned above - if pads and sensors are changed, is there any other reset required, or will that sort it?

Check the brake fluid level.

I had the same issue, and I dont know the codes for 354 and 382? where did you get those from?

1: try resetting the service level for the brakes

2: manually inspect the brake pad wear sensors, my car used to give me an error with the rear brakes all the time, had them changed though, and the tech said the sensor didnt have good contact. 10$ for the part. 5 20 minutes to replace. if you need to.

I used Wilt's system when the error showed this morning. Held on the BC for a few seconds, this bought up the codes.

354 - Start Off Assistance Inactive
382 - DSC Restricted/Brake Pressure Sensor

If your getting a code that has to do with DSC I would highly recommend taking it to a german auto shop, or someone specializing in BMWs, if your popular at your dealer with the SA they might give you a free diagnostic as well. But not something I would attempt to work on myself.

You've got a bad brake pressure sensor. It's located in the DSC module I believe. The sensor itself is fairly pricey at $150 for BMW; an OEM one, if it exists, would be cheaper.

Your car is completely safe to drive, DSC just might not function and that annoying warning will happen randomly.

+1

Depending where you live I might want DSC fully functioning, also if the car believes DSC is not available you cannot use cruise control

Thanks guys, superb advice.

The garage had it yesterday, and couldn't find a thing, as the fault codes seem to come and go.

At least now it can be properly sorted....and I can drive it without worry in the meantime.

Will replacing the sensor wipe the error codes, or is there a reset procedure?

Silly question - is there just 1 sensor, or one on each corner?

BMW just tried to sell me a complete unit - £1700 - $2149!

They reckon that's the only fix!
