The plastic around the trunk latch

When you open the trunk there is this plastic around the latch. The latch is under the plastic. Is it ok to rest somewhat heavy objects on the plastic? It seems like the plastic part is there to allow people to rest objects on it. It is a little close to the bumper though.

How durable is the rubber seal that is attached to the plastic. Is it easy to rip or get loose?

I've put what I'd consider a lot of weight on this ledge. I've used it to put a 2 drawer metal file cabinet into the car as well as a giant L-shaped wooden desk (in pieces in a box of course).

You should be careful when doing this though since like you said, its easy to scrape the bumper it sticks out quite a bit from this ledge. Also be careful if the bumper's ledge is dusty and you run something like a box across it. The dust will leave little scratch marks in your paint.

I don't know how easy it is to rip loose since mine is still in place.
