Driving tips for saving fuel
I managed to squeeze 36 MPG out of my 320i earlier on my daily commute to work (non motorway) but i had to drive like a grandad to get it lol
Would be interested to know what MPG other 320i owners are getting and do you have any tips on how to save fuel? Coasting in neutral seems to make MPG go up rapidly on the trip computer but i don't think that's a true reading or something you should really do? ECO Mode seems so sluggish i don't use it.

If you coast in neutral the engine has to burn fuel to tick over and not stall, keep it in gear and you use no fuel as the engine is turning.
Keeping it in gear means more drag so less distance, so i decided that i don't care. |

I can easily get 40-42 on the way home on the motorway (takes a while to get to those figures though) and mid to high 30s on the rest. I leave it in comfort as ecopro was too much work. I don't hammer it as I usually can't be bothered on the way home. Classic fm on and drive, easy.

Just passed the 1200 mile mark on my 330i so the engine is still a tad tight, but getting 32-33mpg on a 12-mile commute in fairly heavy traffic, averaging c. 20mph. On a longer run home with a few motorway miles thrown in I'll see maybe 35-36mpg. Not really driving like an OAP either

Long-term average for my 330D is 37, with an enthusiastic right foot as my default mode.

330i, Average over 10k miles 36.8mpg. Town driving sees low 30's, A decent run on normal roads sees high 30's, long run on the motorway high 40's with an all time best for a 200 mile run of 53mpg. If you are serious about improving mpg, then watch the economy meter (easier if you have full black panel display). The tiniest lift on the accelerator with no reduction in speed will result in significant reduction in fuel consumption. I have also found that accelerating harder to get up to speed quickly then lifting slightly to coast and get the mpg up is much better than accelerating slower for longer. Very small changes in the way you drive will improve your mpg if you really want to. I drive in sport mode most of the time, never use eco pro, I always use cruise control set to 75mph on the motorway (50 in roadworks) and don't drive like a grandad, but I don't drive with a heavy right foot either

Bollocks to all that
Buy a 335xd. Enjoy the savage acceleration and mighty torque and still get over 40 mpg

I drive my 2012 328i 70 miles daily on average. Mix of 70% freeway at 80-85mph and 30% city at 30-45mph. I don't drive gently either. I just filled up today and calculated my mileage. 29mpg. If I babied it I could easily get 32-33mpg if not more.

I'd sacrifice the 5 or 6 mpg and just drive it normally. Little point in saving a few quid if you bore yourself to death in the process. |

In the summer I got 53mpg on my way home in my 328i auto (very similar engine to the 320i)
However that was a warm day (although still a cold start), driving like a nun, in eco-pro and every junction I managed to get through without stopping. Not suggesting that anyone would want to drive like that normally but does show petrol can be pretty economical under the right conditions. My current average (over the last 2500 miles or so) is exactly 40mpg, most of my mileage is a 24 mile commute so generally no short journeys Fuel consumption is noticeably worse in the winter |

I get 40+ from my new 535D M S and it's not done more than 1250 miles yet.

On a recent run to Wrexham (approx 60 miles) down A and B Roads I used eco pro for the first time proper since having my 330d. I averaged 54 mph and wait for it...saved 2 blue miles! 3% for driving like a nun. Conclusion...fuck it, ignore eco poo and drive normally! However I must caveat this by saying eco poo does come in handy (physcologically at least) when playing fuel light bingo, like last week where I didn't even have 0 miles showing in fuel tank, it just read----!

Thanks for your replies
Like a lot of you are saying, i need to stop looking at MPG so often and just enjoy driving the car. I'm becoming a little bit obsessed over how much it costs to run. I came from a 120d which did 48MPG on my commute to work to a 320i 32MPG so its going to cost more, i just seem to be at the pumps a lot! I am starting to track it all on fuelly so time will tell. I wish i had at least tried a 330d / 335d but i really craved a petrol engine. I can see the appeal on the Auto for sure and i'll try it out next time. Only had my car for 4 months so too early to trade in haha In sport mode, the 320i is decent enough. I tend to stick to comfort for my commute to work though and i've only used ECO Pro once and it was sooooo slow. On my way to / from work i sit in slow moving traffic most days across country lanes and A roads...not the best for fuel consumption. I was happy with my car until i joined this forum lol...I bought it as a luxury commuting car, with the naughty option of petrol engine, all servicing included for 5 years and warranty for almost 3. I pretty much only have to stick fuel in it and replace tyres. Need to keep in mind how much that is going to save me vs the saving in petrol vs diesel!
