How loud is a muffler delete?

I know this is a popular route for the F22. I've watched a number of videos and I think it sounds great. The videos make it hard to gauge the volume, though.

Is it obnoxiously loud? I'd like to hear my car when I accelerate, but I don't want to sound like a high school kid setting off car alarms, either. From what I've read, the muffler delete isn't as loud as some people expect because the resonator and downpipe still provide some muffling.

So what's the verdict on loudness? Is just replacing the resonator with straight pipe a better alternative?

with a catless DP its pretty loud. 95 DB id say.

City Traffic (inside car) 85dB
Train whistle at 500', Truck Traffic 90dB
Jackhammer at 50' 95dB
Subway train at 200' 95dB

The drone and cold start is whats loud. Driving its decent, but your GF/wife will hate it.

Just curious Mike. Do you like the exhaust note in general of the n55 over the b58? Any distinguishable difference between the two?

Thanks for the info. How about the midpipes (resonator bypasses)? Do they add any real volume to the exhaust?

You do have a lot of options to upgrade the sound anyways .. Downpipes, midpipe or axle back should do it

Do the muffler delete. No other after market exhaust will sound anywhere near as good as doing this. It's the cheapest method too. I have a muffler and resonator delete and it sounds so aggressive. I would recommend this every time, 10/10!

Good to hear. I've seen a lot of youtube videos and I like the sound. I'm just not sure about the volume, since it's hard to gauge that in a YouTube video. If it's as loud as a subway car at 200 feet (thanks bryan_f22) it might be just a bit too loud.

do you want a louder exhaust or actual performance gains?

I think a catless DP with resonator delete would probably give you a nice boost in power and sound but not drone.

You can keep the stock muffler.
The MPE or Dinan wont do much or add any power and that money will best be spent on a tune.

Mike can sort you out with whatever you decide.

Thanks. Thinking about this too, but then I need to get the JB4 or else I'll have a CEL on. I'm a little worried about warranty issues with the JB4 and also concerned that the dealer won't take the car in trade without cats. On my last trade, they made me sign an affidavit that I hadn't tampered with the cats

Get a catted Downpipe. No cel, passes all emissions. BMW can't say anything.

Get the JB+ or Dinan sport, both can be taken off in the parking lot before you bring it in for service.

Or just get a ECU flash that will remove the CEL. Make sure you go with a good tuner so it doesn't throw a DME tamper code.

How bad is the drone? I already did the resonator delete and it made a difference but still not that loud.

drone on delete is right around 3800 rpm, with a cattless DP youll drone at 3800 and 5500 rpm.

At first its pretty bad, but as time goes on, you get used to it and it does get a bit quieter.

Cold starts are loud too, but if you give it a little gas it gets a bit quieter.

you can hear the drone here:

when i take that right double apex at 3k rpm...

It didn't really sound bad to me. I just want my car to be louder so i might pull the trigger on it anyways. Does it vibrate? Or more of just the noise?

depends on how the delete is fabricated, and what tune you have.

It vibrated very bad with a certain tune i ran for a week during cold starts.

You can always have the muffler shop fabricate a J pipe with your delete to remove any drone.
