What does the dealer actually have to do to activate alarm?
I called a local dealer and they told me that they have to do a software update which will take all day, which didn't sound right to me. OTOH, I might want to get a software update anyway, which will hopefully fix the issue with the auto lights not going off. I'm wondering if just doing the software update on a car with an unactivated alarm will activate it automatically?

No. software update doesn't have anything to do with alarm activation. If you SA is nice enough, he may throw you the activation for free. You have to give him 5 rating in return.

To activate the alarm they have to go into a retrofit menu on the update computer and ell the system to upload the alarm software onto the car.
Its a different procedure from normally updating the software
