When do I put my snow tires on?

When do you all swap out your snow tires wheels?

Undecided as to whether I'll do it myself or take to a shop. Assume that four wheels and tires will fit in the trunk/ back seat easily?

With my past vehicles, I've always had dedicated snow tires & rims. To play it safe, I make the switch by mid November. If you are using dedicated summer tires, it's the cold temperates that you should be wary of. Of course snow and ice would present a problem.

Usually no later than Thanksgiving. As NHman pointed out, the stock PSS's REALLY start to struggle once the temps get down into the 40's...maybe even in the low 50's. Very big decrease in traction/grip in cold temps, especially if they're a bit worn down.

All 4 tires will fit in the back seat, though it will be an annoying drive back home with them banging against the seat backs. I splurged for the ~$150/year (I think?) to just have them stored at my local dealer.

Agree with mid November or whenever the outside temp gets to less than 50 degrees for a high on average. Michelins can get very slippery at 40, and even worse around freezing.
It is not just a snow issue. I keep my other set of wheels at the dealership and have them swapped every 6 months.

Not until I see a threat of snow in the next 3 days or the high temperature for the week isn't going above freezing.

Last year I didn't put my winter tires on until Christmas eve, and it hit 65 that day. But it also snowed 5 days later. Now I know my stock summer tires have reduced grip/performance below 50/45 so I know to take it easy when starting out and not blast around corners going 60mph+ when it's cold.

If you have the equipment and space to do it yourself, do it yourself. It's really easy.

Change them yourself. All the tools you need run just over $100.

I started doing work on my car for the first time ever. Swapping tires of very easy. And you have piece of mind 1.) the wheels won't be damaged 2.) all bolts will be torqued to spec.

don't hold off too long, you don't want to be driving summer tires in cold temps...people often forget that snow is not the only purpose of winter tires

Most BMW Dealerships will swap them for free... mine does..

You can fit all four if you put the seats down and put them in correctly.

If you've never had a car with summer tires I VERY HIGHLY urge you to swap them out before temperatures get below about 37/35 degrees. Especially with any chance of perception. Massive safety issue for you and others on the road.

Both of those look right. Just needs to be 17mm.

Assuming you're going to lift it using the factory jack points, you might also want to get a jack pad adapter if you don't already have one.

You need a low profile jack or low ramps under your tires in order to use a jack pad. I have a jack I got from Sears and I can't get it under the car if I use a jack pad.

i wouldn't have the car jacked up all winter something tells me the struts are not meant to be decompressed like that for that long...just park the car on tire pads to prevent flat spotting

Sorry, maybe jack pad wasn't the right wording. Was referring to the "adapter" that fits into the factory jack points for when you're temporarily lifting the car to get the wheels off.

That 'thing' is exactly what I was talking about. The thickness of the disk prevented my jack from getting under it to lift the car.

I use a hockey puck on the jacks lift platform, to hit the cars jacking points, vs the "jack pad / adaptor" thingy. I use them on many other cars also. Works for me.

Quick update. The decision was made for me a couple of weeks ago when I had two of my wheels stolen. I didn't know people still did this kind of stuff.

Had to put on my snows as backup.
