Need advice on buying 2011 335is with DCT

Apparently the 2011 335is I'm looking at has the N54 engine, and uses the dual clutch 7 speed transmission. Is there any reason to steer clear of this car? Will it require the Alpina tune to defeat the torque limiter in 5th, or is it a no issue? The main reason I plan on dumping my '07 is the torque limiter issue in 5th. I know I could upgrade the VB and TCM, but I'd rather move on.

Thanks for the input.

I would upgrade to a 335is just because its newer than your 07 and it has a better transmission then the plain auto. Not sure if it has that same issue than yours. GL

Thanks for the advice. I plan to mod the hell out of it, so that's why I'm trying to be careful with what I buy.

You won't have much fun launching at the track until LC RPM is more adjustable than 5000RPM (stock 335is) or 3500RPM (135is flash). On slicks or DRs, it may be a non-issue, but then you'd have to contend with axles and drive shafts. I only tune on the street, so can't comment on 5th-7th gear limits, but DCT is a whole different animal than AT when it comes to that. I've run over 800nm output without hitting maxed tq limiters...at least in 3rd/4th.

Hopefully, BQ chimes in. When it comes to tuning DCT/looking at DCT logs, there's probably no one that's seen more than him. If he doesn't drop in here, I'd reach out and ask him directly.

I'm not sure what "mod the hell out of it" includes, but if you looking for 575-600+ tq, you'll probably need upgraded clutches at some point.

The DCT trans is awesome.
There is no Alpina flash for the DCT, Alpina never used the DCT trans.
And it doesn't need one.

If you do find the trans a bit slow or unresponsive sometimes, getting the latest software update will sort it. Some earlier DME/TCU versions were crap.

Buy it. I'm in the 500whp/550wtq neighborhood with no limiter issues. I do suggest flash tune only via MHD/BQ Tuning. I've had very good results for over two years now with zero issues.

The drag strip can be tricky. I run high 11's and it traps at 122+ on street tires with a 60 ft of 2.0 plus so there's plenty of room for improvement with DR's and better launching technique. I think you would really enjoy the car.

I tell you what smart guy, go on drag times and find a better time for a stock turbo, full weight, street tires, and 2.15 60 ft. BTW, these times were before inlets/outlets and the car was at 460/530. It's a traction issue, not a power issue. A 60 ft of 1.7/1.8 makes it a solid 11.4-11.5 car. To make it apples to apples beyond the 60ft just subtract the 60 ft from the ET. This takes traction and launch technique out of the equation and car vs car at that point. My 9.70 stacks up pretty well in that metric. Let me know what you find. Remember, this is a DCT, no LC, can't brake boost, rolling on the throttle 335is.

Thanks for the input.

Nothing wrong with a 2011 335is. The double clutch trans is a good transmission. It's used in the m3's too.

Buddy of mine has a 2012 335is and loves it. He has about 50k on his and there's been no issues thus far.

N54 is an N54 to be honest.

The 7 speed double clutch trans is fun to play with because it has launch control.

It doesn't get as good as gas mileage as the 6 speed though, but I gather you probably don't care, if your gonna mod the car.

Were you expecting him to have a '10 second car' cuz it's modded and we all live in the fast and the furious? Lol

Op you won't be disappointed with the iS, I love mine. The aux radiator and oil cooler will be a plus since you plan to mod, stronger engine mounts and transmission that can handle more torque.

Sorry to be that guy, but I didn't follow through with the purchase. The auction went higher than I was willing to pay, so I had to pass. Honestly I'm looking for the biggest ROA (performance wise) I can get from an inexpensive inline 6, and I'm not convinced the DCT car's fulfill that requirement.

In all fairness to the 335is, I'm looking for more of a beater to mod and race when it suits me more than I'm in need of a pristine and classy daily driver.

Truth be told, my next bimmer should be AWD, as insane launches in the 3's are what I like that most. The only problem with that is the fact I have a set of 335i hybrid turbos on the way in the next moth that should support 600WHP. Does anyone know if I can have the supplier easily fabricate them to work with the IX? These are prototypes which are costing me a song, so I'm not passing the deal up for some proven turbo's that cost 4x as much (seriously, I'm getting them that cheap). The builder is well known in the Porsche and Audi world, but just dipping his toe in BMW waters right now.

Anyway, if they can't be made to work with the IX I'll be buying a 335i. My '07 is just too long in the tooth to spend another penny on. At 137K and the dumb tranny that won't take a flash, I'm better off upgrading.

Anyway, thanks for being patient and I appreciate constructive advice.

I'm pretty sure your comment was one of the best examples of a completely unnecessarily rude ignorant thing said on this forum. And you chose to reply to me for what reason... reply to LMB335IS and have an intelligent conversation explaining to him why he's so slow, if you're capable of having one that is. How fast is your n54 btw?

ET has almost nothing to do with HP or TQ. 11.9 isn't all that quick for 450whp or even 400whp in the grand scheme of things, just FYI.

UPDATE:

I made an offer today for a nicely optioned '11 335is, but they were already processing a loan application for someone. They suspect he will have credit issues due to being an immigrant with new SSN. I'll know tomorrow around lunch if I'm buying it.
