BMW's new M550i xDrive is quicker than the current M5

Quote:
BMWrevealed the seventh generation of the 5 Series business sedan last week and announced it will be launched on the U.S. and Canadian markets in February next year with a choice of two new gasoline engines. These are the 530i and 540i, offering 248 horsepower and 335 hp respectively.

For those who can’t wait for the new M5 to arrive, which will happen most likely at some point next year, the Bavarian company will launch a hot M550i xDrive version, set to join the range alongside the 530e iPerformance plug-in hybrid in March 2017. This high-performance sedan will be positioned just a step below the flagship M5 and will come with the familiar 4.4-litre biturbo V8 engine that we all love. In this version, it generates 462 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque.

As BMW explains, the car “will take over as the sporting highlight of the new BMW 5 Series range, for the time being at least” and will sprint from a standstill to 100 kilometres per hour (62 miles per hour) in only four seconds, making it significantly faster than the current M5 with its 4.4 seconds.

Probably due more to its performance off the line (awd) than anything else

quicker to 60 is one thing. I doubt the 550i will trap high 11's at over 120 mph like the F10 does. The 550i is down over 100 HP compared to the M5.

When will automotive journalism stop using the 0-60 metric as go-to (and sometimes only) speed measure? Do they really think the majority of the general public is that clueless?

Agree. Mostly due to the Xdrive system from 0 to 60.
That is why I look forward to the next generation M5s and M3s with 8 and 6 cyl engines + electric motors for additional traction)

0 to 60 is more important than you think in North America. We don't get to drive more than 85mph that often.

The majority of the public is that clueless and will accept any factoid without any thought. Simple comparisons x > y are easy for people to grasp. Even if it does not matter. Things that don't matter sell cars.

On short twisty tracks I'm sure the AWD would help exit corners harder/faster. Would probably have some advantages depending on the situ.

As far as comparing for public ( US ) road consumption. one is 2x as fast you can use, the other is 3x as fast as you can use. lol.

Even on the random back road that you every once don't have a minivan or mini suv in front of you, 600 vs 500 hp is not going to be the thing that makes the difference in fun. Its going to be how well you can dig into the twisty and not feel like you are gonna die. ( current F10 550xi has that you're gonna die feeling :P no )

On the highway.. cruising at 80-100 is going to be effortless and boring in both. ( and has been for 20+ years in BMWs ).

I hope the G30 is less drug boat and a little more corner carver.
