oil viscosity

Hello, I have BMW e90 325i n52 sedan, and I have to add 1liter/quart of oil every 400miles/600km

I'm wondering if the oil consumption can change if I use different kind of oil brand/viscosity?

Currently using 5w-30 fully synthetic

Been searching about the oil viscosity and what it means but haven't found anything :S

I live in kinda cold climate country.

Having to add 1L of oil every 400 miles/600kms? That's highly unusual to lose that much oil in such a short mileage distance so you must have some kind of leak somewhere. Changing the oil viscosity can affect oil consumption, but not by how much you are having to add. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. You are already using 5w-30 fully synthetic which is the correct oil so you should have your engine checked for worn seals and gaskets especially if it has high miles.

Basically I spoke about that issue to mechanic in my country and he told me that fixing this issue would probably be really expensive...?
I looked up gaskets and seals replacements and they aren't that expensive in US ?
He said lowest price would be 500 euros and it can only go higher depending on the problem. That's weird.

And also to note he just checked if there's no leaks, there wasn't. So the oil is getting in the engine and being burned most likely.

I think you need to do a compression and leak down test to confirm the health of the cylinders. If they are all close to specification, then look at the oil separator, it may be broken and allowing oil to get into the intake an thus being burned during combustion.

Good luck with it.

If you can money-shift it, it's a manual transmission. "Yeah, but NO ONE puts an automatic trans shift knob on a manual transmission."

Are the seals valve guide seals? Those should not go bad unless the engine has been overheated at some point in its life.

I think oil viscosity is the least of your concerns if you are topping off 1L every 600km. To answer your question, though, I would use a 0w40 A3 oil with LL01 spec preferably.

What should the oil level be when it needs a quart when using a obd2 to check?
