Do you get crap buildup in your air filter box?

Here's mine:

Found leaves, dirt, and grit.

I'm guessing that's normal?

What filter or box are you running?
OEM, or otherwise?

OEM box, filter itself may not be OEM but seems to be compatible. It was orange in color.

normal.. the box is ram air and anything you run into while driving will end up in that box. that is the dirty side of the filter.

take it all off and run DCI, see how dirty your bay gets lol.

Yes. I saw tons of crap (leaves, bugs, lots of bees surprisingly) when I took everything off to replace my MAF sensor. I just vacuumed everything else and installed a new air filter after I was done.

The environment that you drive in will end up in that air box if flys/sucked in.......I tend to clean mine out every six months or so and to inspect filter regardless of mileage.

That's why there is an airfilter...

On my Z4 when I bought it used at CarMax when I got around to changing the filter, there was a mouse nest in the airbox. It was almost a 1/4 full of paper and rags. But you know CarMax's "experts" do a full, complete inspection of all their cars they sell...

Tell me about it. I discovered my car had a battery half the size of the usual larger type used by BMW. I mean, it looked like a battery from a Civic. I took it back to Carmax and they wouldn't change it because it was already a new battery.

After a long argument, I went to the BMW dealer down the street, got a print out showing what kind of battery our cars use (they were shocked when I showed them the battery Carmax had installed) and went back to Carmax. The manager got upset, but ended up buying and replacing it with the correct battery. I was in the shop watching them install it. I should have taken pics but oh well. Carmax doesn't know anything about BMWs, but sometimes you can find a good deal there!

Well one of my dogs chewed the shit out of the front bumper cover and bit all along the front fender lips, plus scratched the shit out of the rocker panels. He was chasing a mouse (or so he thought). Ironically he was on hallucinogenic drugs after having a few teeth pulled...

Scary thing was my insurance guy had seen the same thing before. That's why I keep a $100 deductible.

And one other time a mouse chewed a hole in an EVAP line, which threw the loose gas cap light.

On the Z3 a mouse chewed right through the air vents on the windshield cowling and made home in the blower motor.

They call them pests for a reason.

Yup, same with my Z4, the battery is not the correct size and did not have the proper venting hooked up. I've rigged the battery so it stays put and I reinstalled the vent. The day after I picked the car up it threw a low coolant code. And I changed the oil right when I got it. Some crappy non-fitting CarQuest oil filter and God knows what oil they used; it smelled like conventional non-synthetic...

CarMax is just a BS fancy used car dealer in my opinion. They make it all look good and fancy so they can justify their bullshit "we don't negotiate" policy. I'll never buy another car from them.
