quick..oem BMW battery replacement question

06 330i sedan Sport. Drove car 2 days ago in the morning to work, no problem starting. When I got to work, turned engine off with keyfob still inserted but everything is off. I sat in car for a few mins and Yellow battery light came on. I took the key out and locked the car. Came back afterwork and restarted the car and it was fine. I figured it is time to change my old battery, this is my first change since 2006. battery is 10+years old.

quick questions..
1) register/rest new battery?
I have spoken to 2 bmw parts department and they both told me as long as the battery is the same type, NO need to register/reset. just disconnect the old one and install the new one. mine is a 12v 90aH 720cc. is that really the case?

2)I heard that the white battery is very heavy? how heavy is it? 20lb? 30lb? or 40lbs? i need to bring a cart if anything cause the parts department is farther away from the dealership and no parking lot. I may have to find street parking and walk.

thanks

FYI, one dealer quoted me $235 and another quoted me $275 for battery onLy.. first dealer quoted me installation is $575(not including battery). wtf..

You need to register the battery no matter what. If you change battery type or size you have to also code it to the new battery. Yes these batteries are very heavy and carrying it a short distance shouldn't be an issue but long distance you may need some help.

1)it should tell you what the battery is right on the top of the
battery . The white lead acid battery with a 90 ah rating is the typical
battery. You can use any lead acid battery that has a 90ah or greater
capacity form factor 49/h8. Don't use battery back up when replacing
the battery it blows fuses.
Don't close the trunk with the battery out.
All car battery's are heavy.
Go to and independent BMW shop or change yourself.

I find this whole registering the battery thing a bit odd, If you have to tell the car the battery is new so it can charge it accordingly the car should be smart enough to read the voltage of the battery and use that as a reference as to how much or how little to charge it. Can someone explain why it don't work that way?

I agree with BMW parts department. No need to register lead acid battery. Just give them the part number located on top of battery. Actually the original part number has been replaced with a newer one which the battery has more CCA. Price can range from dealer to dealer I guess. I only paid $175.00 back in 2014. Replace it yourself and will save money. I was able to do it by following a video on youtube. Cheers!

New batteries should be registered, if not your car will work, but the IBS won't know you have a new battery and will charge it with an "old battery" profile, reducing the longevity of your new batt.

If you change the spec or type of battery, then it needs to be coded too so the car knows what's inside.

When I replaced my OEM battery, I went with the largest OEM AGM battery available for the E90, then had it coded and registered accordingly.

I have seen this stated a thousand times but it still don't fully explain why, You would think these cars would be able to detect based on battery voltage etc on how to charge the battery, it supposidly senses when the battery is detoriating and charges it accordingly so why can't it do the opposite when it senses a fully charged new battery?

people please dont confuse OP more. 2005-2006 models come with acid lead battery white color. While 2007 and newer come with AGM. Also regarding the IBS sensor this reset itself when new battery is installed.

My 2007 did NOT come with AGM, but I upgraded to AGM last year when it was due for replacement.

I'm not an engineer or have knowledge on this, EXCEPT to say I have spoken to SEVERAL "experts", BMW service techs, as well as indies, and community experts online, and they all say the same thing.

Why risk it? My indy coded & registered it as part of his installation (1/2 hr labour).

I'm not going to risk not registering my new battery, it just baffles me why the car can't do what I stated above and I have yet to see an explanation as to why.
