My local dealer has been good to work with so far, so I'm not complaining - I just want feedback on a situation.
I asked them to refinish a wheel and it came out great, but my TPMS sensor was going off and the tire had zero pressure. I brought it back in and the service tech showed me where the tire was ripped on the sidewall where the mounting machine applied too much pressure. The tire had maybe 10k miles or less left on it. Obviously they must replace the tire. Should I expect them to try to prorate it and ask me to cover most of the cost? What about the fact that it's not ok to replace just one worn tire? Am I on the hook for the other tire now or should they replace them both? What would be fair in this situation? |

Not quite...
I actually could have easily gotten another year plus out of them because I don't drive a lot. So they would be pulling forward that expense significantly. I also wanted to go with non-run flat tires and a different width and aspect ratio to protect my wheels a bit. So, I now bear the opportunity cost of that as well. From what I've read, I face a much higher risk of a crack or bend on 19" 313s on the factory tires. I think they should give me a credit for 2 brand new tires, but I'm sure they will tell me to pound sand on that.

Pro rated 1 tire. Like for like. 2 free new tires is taking advantage of the situation. You might get better pricing by going to a large tire shop instead of dealership. Take the pro rated cash and go to large volume tire shop.

So, they rip my tire and give me $20-80 and I pay $500-$1000 depending on whether I just do the rears or go balls in on all 4? That sounds just a bit unfair to me.

Just tell them to replace your tire with a similar used tire. I'm sure they get trade-ins, auction cars, etc. all the time with 19s on them. It shouldn't be that hard for them to swap a tire off one of those cars (which they'll like replace anyway for CPO purposes) onto your rim.
When I worked @ an Audi dealership a while back, a tech drove a tire into a car lift lifting pad and ripped the sidewall. Since the tire was in about the same condition as yours is, we did just as I described above. The customer didn't give a sh!t because it was the same exact tire anyway and had no problem with the swap. |
