The car is 5yo, 100k km and i got this.... i heard BMW have 12 year warranty for rust. Anyway, the car is leased and i still have 17 months until the end of the lease. I was planning to buy it out after, but now im not sure if i should even fix this. What do u think?

Buy IronX spray and watch it dissolve.

That is rail dust or brake dust(disc and pad combo) embedded into paint.

Have a look at your trunk around the plate, you will likely see some of those there as well.

BMW 12 year warranty is for rust perforation.. rust has to chew through the metal for BMW to cover it

Anyway, luckily it's in a inconspicuous spot and easily fixed. But I'd be concerned that a 5 year old car has rust on it when BMW is supposed to be an industry leader in factory rust protection

How to fix this and how much would it cost?

Can you confirm what you're referring to? If you're referring to the surface rust spots, like noted above, that'll rub off, no issue

If you're referring to the bubbling on the outter side of the rolled edge, if you can confirm that the metal is actually oxidizing under the paint, I'd be inclined to repair it myself.. metal grinder and matching spray paint. It's in such an inconspicuous area that no one would tell. I did the exact same thing on a 2008 Honda Accord in the same area

You call THAT rust

Holy crap - that's just some tiny surface rust MARKS that will come right off with polishing compound

The rest of that 'rough' look to the paint is because BMW sprays a chip guard coating around the lip before painting

And here I thought I was anal

So just a little note on the BMW 12-year rust warranty... If you read the fine print, the owner must have the car inspected yearly and the undercarriage washed and cleaned by a BMW dealer in order to maintain the warranty.

That's not rust... I have yet to see a e9x with fender or quarter panel rust. Even 2005 production cars.

And yes, the fenders are partially rolled from the factory. No idea why it's not completely rolled but they are in the f3x/f8x bmws.

This right here. 100% it's not noticeable on dark cars but white and silver you'll really see it.
