MPE vs Dinan after market mod?

It's my understanding that while you can't pick out the MPE on the BMW website as an individual option, it is an option that can be ordered at the time of the build. The MPE is, however, part of the M performance package, correct?

It seems like everyone who got it absolutely loves it. How much is this option and any advice on getting the MPE vs getting the standard stock exhaust on the car and then getting a Dinan tune after market?

It is a port installed option. Meaning it is not installed at the factory but at the port when it arrives but before it is delivered to the dealer. There is a package you can buy that has it but you can also buy it separately and they will install it at the port.

It is basically a louder version of the standard exhaust and doesn't really add any appreciable performance gains. Not sure how it compares to other after market options.

Port installed MPE has a MSRP of $3,000. If you want the carbon fiber tips add another $1,500.

I should add that one advantage of having it port installed is that it is added to the car's warranty as opposed to just the two year warranty you get if you have it installed after you take delivery. The downside with port installation is you don't get to keep your original parts if you want them.

Dinan has discussed their offerings for the M2 elsewhere on this site. Search should fine it. Basically, because the M2 stock is close to an S3 Dinan tune of other models, e.g. already tuned close to the maximum in stock form from BMW, there is very little Dinan can do to a stock M2 without upgrading the Turbo. They are working on this offering.

They do have a great sounding exhaust (heard it at Dinan Engineering) for less than 1/2 the price of the MPE, if that might be of interest.

Port Install M Performance Parts VS Dealership Install

Hey guys, I noticed that the port install cost for the M Performance parts are higher compared to the dealership costs with labor included. Is anyone seeing this as well?

thanks......yeah, I was aware (thanks to the great info here) that there isn't much Dinan can do with respect to performance given that BMW has managed to squeeze nearly everything possible out of this N55 engine.
I was just wanting something equivalent to the sound produced by the MPE based on the great reviews of it. You answered that with what you said about Dinan offering an exhaust that sounds great for half the price ...... so like $1500?

Is it covered for the duration of the factory warranty (4 years)?

$1,500 would be 1/3rd. The exhaust and the resonator delete is about $2,110.

Dinan parts are never covered by the BMW warranty. They are covered by Dinan's warranty.

thanks. i thought the exhaust portion alone was $3K and the carbon fiber tips were an additional $1500-- hence my calculation.

I also thought dinan had an agreement with bmw which allowed for their mods to be covered, so thanks for clearing that up.

My understanding is that you have to buy tips of some kind with the MPE, but I may be mistaken. Black tips come on the Dinan exhaust.

MPE is sold without tips

This is contrary to what I have read, so I checked and found $4,500 for the MPE with tips is too high.

The exhaust does not include tips and four tips need to be purchased.

From BMWUSAs web site, that would make the:

MPE with Titanium Tips $2,540 + 4 x $242 = $3,508

MPE with Carbon Fiber Tips $2,540 + 4 x $337 = $3,888

http://www.shopbmwusa.com/PERFORMANC...MANCE/EXHAUSTS

I am sure other web sites will be less expensive.

$4,500 is the MSRP if you have MPE + CF tips installed at the port. I'm just saying it's MSRP, you can always try to negotiate a better deal (unlikely on a M2). Once the car is delivered you will pay the price on the link you posted but with the two year warranty.

Guarantee you can reuse your stock tips if you really wanted. BMW told me I had to buy tips for my M235i's M Performance exhaust and I was able to reuse my tips quite easily. Little bit tough to knock them off the stock exhaust with some wood up against them and a rubber mallet but they popped off. Just had to look inside them and then fix the kind of spring tensioned prongs that held them onto the pipes coming out of the stock muffler. Having had my M2 up on my lift it seems like they would pop off just the same.

i'm on the fence with these options as well.
But i'm going to be adding a downpipe first and see how the stock exhaust sounds. I think it might do the trick.

Exactly correct. So you spend $4000 and don't add the the value of the car. Or you buy it after and then sell the exhaust for $3k or so before selling the car. Net cost $1000. Who needs a warranty on an exhaust?

I would, especially for an exhaust well north of $3k. The E9X M3 MPEs had issues (cracks developed from normal street use) - so I'd like a little coverage.
