F87 M2 with M4/M3 Carbon Ceramic Brakes with weights

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Ever since we collected our M2 we wanted to carry out this conversion. We hadn't seen it carried out before (found out the MOTO GP car had it afterwards!) but were confident it would be a straightforward as the M2 uses M3/M4 running gear. You can follow the car build on instagram @StarlaM2

We took the opportunity to weigh (KG) the components as we carried out the work.

Stock Front Caliper

Front Caliper for Ceramics

Stock Rear Caliper

Rear Caliper for Ceramics

Stock Front Disc

Ceramic Front Disc

Stock Rear Disc

Ceramic Rear Disc

The calipers weigh a total of 6.72 KG more but the discs are 14.98 KG lighter losing 3.96 KG of rotating mass on each front and 3.53 KG on each rear disc.

We are going to try to lose as much weight as possible off this car without stripping bits off it. Forged Wheels are next in stock sizes to shave of a few more KG's of rotating mass.

Carbon Revolution wheels would lose serious rotating weight off it. they weigh 8.5 pounds each or 3.85 Kgs.

These should be optional, along with adaptive dampers from the factory.

Bravo! Bravo! Maybe BMW will offer this in a competition package together with cf roof and the b58 engine.

I almost came out of my chair when I saw the calipers weigh MORE! Glad I kept reading to see that discs provide weight savings for the combo. Thanks for taking the time to make these measurements..

8 lbs per corner is a decent amount of unsprung weight... but I still cant imagine that this really is a justifiable upgrade for anything more than the bling factor.. the calipers and rotors must have cost $7-10K... ?

The gold calipers look great on MG and would look great on BSM. Not sure they would work so well on AW or LBB

I bet cars equipped with CCB will depreciate as fast as a 7-series. That's fast! 7 ;p

Do CCB M3/4's have a different master cylinder and/or DSC unit?

Was only a matter of time. When I was out in Thermal (back in March driving the M2) the instructions and BMW Geniuses said the parts conversion would be a simple swap as everything matched between the two. It's nice to see the final products. I could only imagine what this would cost to do as the parts are crazy $$$.

Crazy the calipers are that much more robust/heavy.

I was surprised as well about the calipers until I remembered that the CCB calipers are 6 piston front and 4 piston rear, so it's not just that gold paint is heavier

I think that you're getting 8 lbs or so of savings per corner in rotating mass, but the unsprung savings is roughly 3 lbs in each front corner and 6 in the rear. Not that it matters a whole lot as both are somewhat small savings. For kicks, I did some calculations based on the weights shared:

Unsprung Savings (kg) Rotating Savings (kg)
Front Corner 1.31 3.96
Front Total 2.62 7.92
Rear Corner 2.82 3.53
Rear Total 5.64 7.06
Total 8.26 14.98

I will take ceramic brakes over steel anyday of the week. I dun care for the weight savings or fade resistance as those dun mean a whole lot for street driving. The absence of brake dust alone does it for me!
