Collision Warning System

Hi All,

I was wondering about other opinions on this system. I find the distance at which it warns to be too close to make it very helpful. I have it set to the earliest warning distance and can't image how late it is when you have it set for the later warning LOL. Clearly if you don't see the car in front of you by then, you will not see the red car icon in your screen.

The chime is also turned off if you have it set in Sport +. Makes sense I guess that is for tailgating/drafting on the track???

I can't imaging "testing" the auto braking, but I will have to trust that it is there if you need it.

Anyone Experience the AutoBreaking yet????? A friend with an CLA AMG did and it shocked him LOL

Definitely have a similar opinion to you thus far after a week and change. Definitely a pretty late warning even on "early." Not really sure how much this will help prevent an accident.

I mainly got the Exec Package for the backup camera (neck problems) so I just kinda feel ¯\_(?)_/¯ about it but would be nice if it was an actually useful feature.

I suspect it will kick in just before impact LOL.....

I really don't need the nanny system, but at least it should make sense. The visual warning alone is not adequate. The tone only happens when you're really close to impact.

The lane departure warning works well and that is helpful. As is the back up camera.

I was just doing some research on this when I came across your post. I will definitely order the exec pack due to the inclusion of this option. I think auto braking will be standard in the future just like air bags are now. Its great technology.

- It took 2x before my class 8 truck salesman had enough guts to trust the auto braking system to stop the truck before it crashed into another stationary vehicle! It worked.....and I ordered it.

Actually I was surprised by that also. But a friend with a new 340ix who is having issues with his blind spot warning system makes me less upset by its absence

Apparently BMW has determined a design flaw in that system and the fix is still up in the air.

I'm currently driving an '17 X3 and the blind spot monitoring on it is complete shite. Might as well not be there, only works maybe 1 to 2 cars out of every 10.

Looking forward to having my baby back after the break in service.

We have the blind spot warning on our '15 Q7, and that works very well.

I had an A4 loaner last year which had it but it did not see Semi's, worked fine with cars but not big trucks. Go figure.

I still look with my eyes....don't trust the gadgets completely.

I don't believe this car does any auto braking as part of the collision warning system. I am pretty sure it is a passive system. This is a camera based system so I don't think it has what it needs to do any auto braking system. I believe it is like the system on my wifes Honda which simply gives an audio a visual (yellow light in the case of the honda) warning when you are approaching a car that is stationary, following too closely or are approaching too quickly.

The Driving Assistant package combines the camera-based systems Lane Departure Warning and approach control and person warning with light city braking function.

The Lane Departure Warning detects lane markings and alerts the driver to an unintentional lane change at speeds above approx. 70 km/h by means of vibrations in the steering wheel. The warning is not activated if the lane change is deliberate, that is, when the indicator has been activated.

Whereas the Approach control warning with light city braking function detects vehicles, the Person warning with light city braking function reacts to pedestrians. If a vehicle ahead brakes suddenly, the BMW responds immediately when the Approach control warning is activated. The system operates in steps. A warning symbol is first displayed, then the symbol begins flashing and an acoustic warning is emitted, and finally the brakes are lightly applied (when travelling at speeds under 60 km/h). The person warning operates at speeds between 10 and 60 km/h and emits a single-level warning in the event of acute danger. If the system warns of a potential collision, the brakes are simultaneously preconditioned for a faster response. In the event of an emergency, the system applies the brakes. This function can be limited by darkness and fog.

Got my first collision warning this weekend. I find it reacts pretty quickly on the fast warning setting. I love it and will leave it this way.

Did you get the warning icon and the TONE?

Any brake activation?

The Collision Warning System on the M2 features auto-brake. Happened twice in 5 months. I had the car under control, decided not to brake but was overruled by the system:
  • inside an underground parking lot when circling downhill between floors; the system apparently calculated on the basis of the acceleration/object distance combo that I risked to hit the curb/wall: it auto-braked which took me by surprise; if a car would have followed me at close range during that auto-brake maneuver, it could have rear-ended me (the braking maneuver may seem erratic to other road users); to avoid the system freaking out again that way, I changed the default setting "Early" to "Late" (OK now when I drive inside that same underground parking lot);
  • moving into the 120 km/h flow of highway traffic, entering via a back road; I accelerated on the highway entry road; the system apparently calculated on the basis of the acceleration/object distance combo that I risked to rear-end a car cruising on the highway, while I was just moving to the left behind that car to overtake it (crossing the lane); the system auto-braked.
Rest assured that auto-braking happens rarely - it's there to assist you in a 'close call' emergency situation. You can put the setting to "Early", "Medium" or "Late". I don't mind the sound warning (beedebeebeep) and the red car icon showing on the instrument panel when you're driving too close to another car. Actually, when the red car icon shows up, I slow down to keep distance till the icon vanishes or overtake the car ahead of me.

Now don't go out to test M2 auto-braking with your garage wall. Auto brake systems ain't foul proof:

Can't you disable it with a button press to the bellow left of the steering wheel?

Was it just the light being on, or did you feel brake involvement????

Every time I turned on and off I would have to hit it.

If I forgot it, it would activate while driving.
