Wheel repair

Can this be repaired so that it's not noticeable? If I can still see it I'd want a new wheel.

Thanks. Do you have any photos of the repair? Is it noticeable?

Yes, but the wheel may need to stripped, repainted, diamond cut and lacquered.

Localised repair may be possible but there's always a risk of white worm after a few months (water ingress under the lacquer).

Because i know it's there. i can see the faintest of shadows. But it really is minimal. This was taken on macro. you can't see it with the eye unless about 6" away. The discolouration is because the wheels are dusty and i wiped it with my finger.

A new wheel for that small amount of damage

I admire your perfectionist requirements but wow, even if the repair isn't 100% I bet you would be the only one that notices it

I think the Op's would come our really well. the damage is all on the chamfer so light would work in its favour.

That's probably only about 0.25mm deep so I'm sure they can machine that out no problem, but as mentioned above could need a full refurb if you want perfection

My mum might be willing to take the wheel for her car. It's the same except it's XDrive and 320d vs my 320i. Both are F30 LCI models.

I assume the wheels will be the same?

We need to swap over the tyres though. Will the TPMS valves break?

I've got similar damage to this on one of my wheels, plus a couple of little 'nicks' on one of the spokes. Unfortunately I didn't spot them when the car was delivered to me after purchase so am going to have to live with it...

But, looking through some of the forum posts i'm likely to get a new set of wheels from BMW due to corrosion so it seems!!

Whats the procedure for doing a decent DIY repair on these polished wheels?

I had worse than that. Took some sandpaper to it, then applied clear coat. Almost invisible. Total cost about a £5 and 20 minutes of my time.

I never managed to get round to fixing this but now it's much worse after an incident involving a kerb, narrow parking bay and an oncoming bus!

I've been quoted £115 by BMW in Giffnock who can do the repair in-house.

Does anyone have any before and after pictures of these wheels after a full face refurb?

If the job isn't up to my standards, I can always sell the refurbed wheel and buy a new one I suppose.

Rather than using BMW, is there not a decent wheel refurb place near to where you live?

Nothing against BMW per se, just my preference would be to know who is doing the work (given I'm sure they outsource it somewhere).

Had worse than that, did as Nisfan said but used emery paper to flat the damage down then over with a finer one, buff with autosol metal polish to perfect shine, degrease & mask 3 coats of clear lacquer, polish & its done.

I took the alloy wheel insurance out when I got mine. £199 for 3 years and 18 indidual repairs. Been done twice already. They use flying colours. Too blokes and top job done to repair. Was about same damage as yours too. Can't notice it.

£115 isn't bad, I got quotes of 150 per wheel to fix my 403M's after a couple of rookie parking errors!

That being said if you have 403M's don't get em refurb'd as the machining process will void the BMW warranty on them I was told, meaning that when the centre inevitably corrodes they'll not replace them.

Was this at BMW Giffnock or elsewhere?

My wife has alloy wheel insurance for her GTD and these guys were sent:

https://revive-uk.com/your-repair/alloy-wheels/

Hers are also diamond cut wheels and they did a good job to be fair. They have branches across the UK, but pretty sure the bloke that came to us was based in Hamilton.
