2008 335xi Turbos shot at 62K
check engine light came on, low engine power. Went to dealer, thought it was charge pipe but told both turbos bad. BMW sued for issue and extended warranty but now I am 5 months past warranty period when issue happens but well under the miles. Turbo sholud not go out with this low mileage, especially both. Clearly a defect since they extended warranty but put time limit on it. Dealer wants $5800 to replace. they are reaching out to BMW NA and so did I. any similar stories or thoughts?

If you pick 2 posts randomly out of this section of the forum, I almost guarantee one of them is about replacing turbos earlier than most turbo's need replacing.

yeah it sucks. I am just wondering if anyone had luck getting them replaced outside the extended warranty period. Dealer says they are bad and I am so far under mileage and close to warranty but outside the timeframe.

so just got off with BMW NA, the customer service rep there was poorly trained. she literally told me that in her experience there would be nothing bmw could do since so long after warranty. I asked what does that mean and I explained I am 6 months past an 8 year warranty and still 20K under the mileage, I would not say far past. And pushed back politely indicating this is a known defect, blah blah. Then she backtracked and said well someone will look into it and get back to you. I asked so if I hung up before pushing back you said someone will look into it was that it? She stayed quiet and then sorry I misspoke. Nice, so they are trained as the first line of defense say no and hope customer goes away. lets see if someone gets back to me. Penny wise and pound foolish. You would think they want to keep customers for life.

Check engine light doesn't magically come on and both turbos are shot. Did you have any prior symptoms, smoking, oil loss? Both turbos don't go out at the same time, just doesn't happen in normal circumstances.
The extended warranty on the turbos isn't due to the build and performance being defective but due to the wastegate rattle which will show symptoms well before they just go out. The stock turbos are very very stout if you take care of them properly. Mine have about 90k tuned miles on them so your case is probably in the unfortunate category if they actually are toast. |

I have 72k on mine and my wastegates sound terrible and I'm loosing boost. I didn't even bother taking mine in there to see if they could do anything. I've got so many mods on my car I think they would've probably laughed at me. haha Mine is 3 months over warranty period. That being said... my installer said he'd charge me 1200 to install new turbos and could get me a set for about 1200-1300. So 2500 bucks to replace turbos total. Not too horrible. I don't want stock turbos again though so I'm waiting on MMD stage 3 turbos to become available again and putting extra cash in those because.... RACE CAR... lol.

Ecs has miitsu oem turbos with installation kit bundled together for 1500 right now (600 per turbo). Install should be around 1k. No need to pay 5800. Yours will be a bit more complex due to awd, but not $3k more complex lol
Edit: they are 700 each not 600

I made a post on this earlier with a poll, should give you a general idea of the rates and mileage. |
