Best place to position axle stand?
Apologies if this is a stupid question.
But where do people position axle stand when raising your car using the jack points of F31? I want belt and braces (just in case car jack gives way). Thanks |

I'm sure I've see a thread on using adaptors when jacking and using a front central point as well as the F3x had unusual positions? I had adaptors for my old Leon Cupra, you could use a normal Jack but it stopped and chance of damage to bodywork etc.

Fair play for having a go and if you are mechanically minded or a 'fettler'. I'm afraid I would have to delegate that task my good man😝

I jack from the approved jacking point then place an axle stand under a sturdy suspension-body mount & lower the car so the stand is 'just taking' a small amount of weight leaving the jack in position taking most of the weight at the approved location.
Should the jack fail the axle stand will save you and any resulting damage to suspension mountings would probably be a relief as it wasn't you that was squashed. If you want to fully raise the car I do it with 2 jacks, raise car via a front jack pad with my small jack(protect yourself with tempo axle stand as above) enabling me to position my larger jack under the front central jack point to the rear of the engine. Raise the front fully up from here and place an axle stand under each front jack point and lower car onto them. Can do similar at the rear using the diff housing, use the solid front part of the diff, not on the flange as you coukd distort it & cause a leak. My big jack has a nice solid rubber pad built in, if using a jack with a metal dish shape I wouldn't jack the diff without some kind of adapter/wood to protect the casting. |

Thanks for you help guys.
It's not to do anything too mechanical. I'm planning to change my own winter wheels this year, so I'm only using the stands as a back up should the jack fail. |

I don't bother with axle stands to change wheels, the worst that could happen is the car falls on the brake disc!

No, why would it be? In 18 years of doing my own car mechanics I've never had a jack fail, so messing around with axle stands for the miniscule chance that a brake disc or bodywork might get a bit damaged isn't worthwhile imo.
Of course if you are going to be under the car at all doing work on it then it's a different matter, however miniscule the chance of you being injured is, it is worthwhile to use axle stands. |

The most I do is change summer wheels for winter wheels. So, I just jack up and change. Maybe a couple of minutes during which the car could sustain damage should the jack fail. Though, I would never go under the car myself using this method... Car in park, hand brake on and the pair of wheels remaining on the ground chocked against the slight slope I'm forced to work on. Car lifted to the minimum height required for me to remove the wheel.
