Car Insurance

It's that time of year again, and my current insurer has pretty much hung itself.

£3000 they want to renew my insurance on my 340i (I did only purchase it less than a month ago), so after a phone call the best they could do was £2800, so they were told to stuff it.

According to comparison websites the 2 cheapest for me are Privilege and Churchill both around the £780 mark for the year.

I was wondering what experience people have of dealing with them as the internet is turning up rather negative! (Especially to Privilege)

I have moved insurers every year for 8 years, their renewals in general suck and they loose customers so damn easy. Very strange business.

Wow! Try LV, they have quoted me £360...

Actually giving me a refund for the balance of my 330d policy.

36, the wife and I, 12k PA protected max no claims with class one business. Just up the coast from you in Whitehaven.

Tried LV, they said no because of my age (I am 24)

I'm going with Direct Line, they still want £570 but that's £100 less than what Elephant want, and they suck anyway, I was with Churchill for years and had no problems, but then I never made any claims

My experience of Privilege was soured when I switched from an F10 to an F30 and had to go through 2 hours of torture describing every element of every option pack in minute detail. I have since decided to permanently avoid insurers which consider factory options to be declarable modifications.

I moved to LV and since to Aviva.

£3000 is a pretty extreme quote, unless you are a drag racing, crack cocaine dealer

Well thanks for reminding me they exist, they want £689, quite the improvement.

For some unknown reason, 3 weeks ago when I was buying the car they were quoting 750 with me alone on it, since then it has jumped to 1200 and that's sticking my parents in the mix.

Give Aviva a go as well. They have become really competitive on some BMWs lately. This year LV raised my premium from £300 to £430. Aviva were £270 (after £60 cashback) and my car has ACS springs as a modification. 15k miles, garaged, low risk area.

Gave them a try, even with cashback still more than Direct Line, my age seems the biggest factor for insurers

Good luck when you break your windscreen then. Direct Line will absolutely not let you have a genuine BMW screen if you are unlucky enough to need one.

If you insist - they will give you £25 towards doing it yourself......

I went with admiral for that reason alone (given the shit screens in the F30's). Was £60 more at £347 but worth it to me.

One to consider mate

That would put me in a bind, I have the HUD on mine, and I know that needs a special type of glass which isn't cheap.

Churchill, Privilege and Direct Line are all the same company, own by Direct Line Group, the claims service should be the same, but like anything insurance, banking etc, if you are not getting anywhere the complain up the line, working in the industry I must say all insurers are pretty much a same same, so loyalty does not help you, the cheapest quote (subject to you having the same excess, NCD protection etc) is normally the way forward.

As long as you tell them you have HUD they would need to use a compatible screen

Interesting. As an ex-customer of Privilege and Direct Line, I would most certainly never deal with them or any of the UK Insurance group again.
I would say the cheapest quote is not always the way go.

Read the small print, understand what you a buying then decide if it's a) value and b) for you.

I've been with Adrian Flux now for 3 years in a row - cheapest quote normally, and then will price match (actually beat) quotes on renewal, so staying with them is easy. I'm 28 / 2 accidents (rear ends, not my fault!) / 3 points / 3 windscreen claims / 2013 330D. Renewal this month was £812, brought down to exactly £600.00 by quote-matching. And they accept mods and remaps etc.

Give them a go!

They aren't doing a very good job of e-mailing this quote to me still have about 3 weeks until renewal so there is still time.

I switched to aviva this year after several years with Admiral. I was happy with service with Admiral but their renewal was a joke and this time they wouldn't budge.

I've paid 1800 for me and my wife on 435d and a Mokka. She is American and been here 3 years. I've had a fault claim in June.

If you do go with aviva definitely get the Aviva drive app and do 200 easy miles with it, I saved about 25%

If my maths is correct (and it usually is), I could get my Aviva quote down to 580 assuming maximum discount for the drive app.

My only issue is doing those 200 miles before renewal!

I've been with Privilege for a few years now. Made a non fault claim a month or two ago and I have to say it was faultlessly smooth.

My renewal has come through the same as sat year, so no reason to switch.

As you say, age will be a factor. My wife is on my policy and only in her mid-twenties on a year old 330d. I think without her it'd be a few hundred cheaper. Then again, a lot of things would

Sounds about right. It's worth doing the miles for it, definitely was in my case. Wife and I took a trip to bicester village purely for 10 mins there to grab a crepe! Lady at aviva only told me about app on the day my renewal was due
