Close one - paying for new DEF Tank

I was surprised I went so long but at 82K miles on our 335D I finally had the common temperature sensor failure in the DEF active tank. With the platinum extended warranty I brought it to the dealer and thought this would be a non issue getting the tank replaced. Not in stock but was shipped overnight and available the next day. Towards the end of the day I get a call they have not replaced the tank as they are not sure it's covered by the warranty, do I want to pay for it if necessary. Simple answer - NO!!

They indicated as this is covered by the emissions warranty which expired at 70K miles it was not under the extended warranty. An hour later the dealer finally heard back from corporate (24 hours after their initial inquiry) that it was indeed covered, but only because I had the platinum level warranty.

My understanding is the new tank design should be more reliable, as I expect to keep this car to 200K miles without significant expense (as I have most my others). I do expect to pay for one more CBU cleaning during that time.

It's cheaper and more fun to do the alpha delete than it is buying one of those tanks.

Yeah kbsilver... I don't think the new designs are any better. You will be replacing more tanks in the future.

This will pass NJ Inspection? Also I thought there was a way to keep the DPF but dump the SCR system?

It's not cheaper this time around as it's covered under warranty. But if on my $$, that's a different story...

I'd have to ask a NJ guy if it does. I believe Ianknown lives in that state with the deletes.

If it's under warranty no doubt just let them fix it lol, mine went out at 110k miles so I had no choice.

Adding another data point - I just had my SCR tank replaced no-questions-asked under my CPO warranty because of a level sensor failure. Mine only made it to 73K.

A lot of inconsistencies. I am a original owner platinum extended warranty, not CPO. In the end it was covered but I was disappointed there was even any question about it. But they did fill to the top with 6 gallons of DEF, which in my car will last about 30K miles. Picked it up yesterday.
