transmission durability
I know the transmission in our d is known to be durable and overall strong... I'm just curious does anyone know what the average life expectancy of this transmission is before needing a rebuild? Several mechanics have told me around 150k miles it will start to go.

I'm just about there with my 2010 and it's all good so far. I would question those mechanics about exactly how many 335d's they have seen with over 150,000 miles with failing transmissions.

Don't really know, but if you change the trans fluid and filter every 50k miles you can have greater assurance that it will last you a bit longer. I changed out my transmission and differential fluid at 30k miles, could have gone way longer, but I did the work myself and the overall cost for parts wasn't bad at all (about $250 total).

I consider the automatic trans the weak link in any modern BMW. Our 2000 540iT has blown the transmission every 60K miles to the tune of a $5K repair bill. Each time it was different metal fatigue failures that all the fluid changes in the world would not prevent. However I still believe in changing the fluid on a regular basis.

Plug for thects.com for their kits, you can look up what you need and order it with the correct ZF6 fluid.
Yes more money then some substitutes but for a once ever 80-120KM service I felt its worth it. - b |
