Methanol Nozzle

How much meth (50% + 50% water) can the the engine process without quenching/stuttering?

My newly installed system uses boost pressures from tapped charge pipe to activate progressive controller from Snow Performance.

Currently pump starts at 22 psi of boost and Maxes out at 26 psi. Nozzle size is 225ml/min (#4).

I think it can handle more volume than 225ml/min. Kit comes with 225 375 625 nozzles.

What nozle/setting are you guys running??

I run dual nozzle 500cc X2. I just moved to all stainless steel lines so I will start running 70% meth then. This is with jerek 2.5 all deletes, egr race pipe, and helix intercooler.

Boost is just one of several variables that control water/meth flow rate vs. quenching. Your starting and max injection points are reasonable, and you should be able to inject quite a bit more solution without quenching. Simplistically, if your boost is around 22 psi and your rpm is up around 2500+, your engine should easily swallow about 630 ml/min. Mine does.

I run 1000cc at 62% meth, and I start spray at 20PSI and max out at 32PSI. The car hasn't quenched with this setup. I am also running BPC stage 3 so it's optimized for methanol.

I feel that you can kick it up a notch and go for 600-1000cc.

I've run just under 1600cc or 50/50 and 70/30 without any issue. 27-29 start, 35 full.

Best nozzle size is a function of a number of variables including what your primary goal is for the meth injection. If cleaning is your goal then a smaller nozzle spraying earlier (lower boost) is better. But if max power is your goal then a larger nozzle spraying later is your ticket. Devil's Own website has a nozzle calculator using fuel type, engine displacement and max boost level; for a stock 335d it suggests 650ml/min is about right. If power is your primary goal (of course more power is always nice even if looking for cleaning primarily) then the largest of the nozzles you have is the right one. If cleaning, I would recommend the middle size nozzle and start it spraying earlier and also reach max a little earlier (perhaps as early as 20 PSI). I believe that some minor quenching is not detrimental to the engine so you may want to play around with the settings, get a solid feel for what quenching feels like, and then make your settings appropriately to eliminate the quenching.

Thanks for all replies. It seems i grossly undershot the nozzle flow rate as my primary goal is power. Glad to hear there's more performance left on the table as I will add a second nozzle rated for 625ml/min. Total will increase to 900 ml/min. This is with deletes & jr tune.

Interesting how the engine can eat approx 3x the meth compared to current setup... that small 1 gallon tank will be devoured in no time!

If anyone's wondering, the Snow progressive controller is able to read and command meth injection up to 50 psi.

I wouldn't be so sure that your nozzles are too small. Try try running 100% methanol. Just make sure you have a fire extinguisher in the car. Quenching should go away and power should go way up.

Another thing to consider is how the voltage ramps run on that controller. Not familiar with your controller, but looks like a 200+psi pump you've got there, so starting it earlier will increase your flow rate significantly through the upper end of the pressure range regardless of the nozzle(s).

I gotta ask the newbie question to you and others who want to chime in. Are you and others using 100% or 99.9% concentrated our methods from a race shop or are you guys using windshield washer fluid or heet products? Wanted to capture the Intel of what others are using and their specific success rates and dollars saved?

Mixing it yourself via M1+ pales and distilled water is the best way, as this will provide a pure methanol and water setup without any other additives that washerfluid or other mixtures might contain. I do run the 62% mix through my washerfluid tank and do use it on occasion for cleaning my windshield.

I forgot how much it comes out to, but I want to say somewhere around $6 per gallon for my own mix, opposed to Snow's 50% which costs roughly $10-12 per.

Thank you sir. I have been monitoring the $/gallon. I can get a 55 gallon drum of bulk methonal for $150. So I think that would be the more economical route as long as I don't get too much cndensation from it sitting in my garage. So I assume distilled water is used for its purties vs. tap water has too many impurities...

That's a good price, it's $50 per 5 gallons of methanol for me out here. I need to find a bulk supplier, lol.

It's about $30 for 5 gallons here locally so that's a great deal. And I don't think condensation is too much of a worry for us, we're adding water to it anyway

Yeah I just paid $15 for a 5 gal drum, $50 is crazy high. I got mine from a race shop that gets it in bulk, but if you can find an actual direct supplier you might get an even better deal.

Pure methanol purchased from a racing fuel company.
