Oil service interval for the 8HP70

Just opening a thread to let others that may be interested know that I recently contacted ZF concerning oil changes for the 8HP70 gearbox.

They recommend changing it between 80k-120k KM depending on usage.

It was a news for me, since BMW says that it's a lifetime fill...

Anything at all, ever, that says "filled for life" or equivalent, read it as this :

"Designed to fail once we won't end up fixing it under warranty"

News for me as well, but I am not surprised. However here in Norway the BMW Warranty is 5years/200k km. So by time BMW must learn if the transmissions are failing.

BMW does define "lifetime" as 120k miles / 200k km.
After all, nothing is really supposed to last forever, and manufacturers care about the 1st buyer from which they get their money from.

That 1st buyer is much happier if he doesn't have to pay lots of money on maintenance and change it eery 60k miles. (the ZF Lifeguard 8 fluid started selling at around £30-40 per L and you need at least 8L)

This is the same reason why you get silly 30k km on oil changes. Less cost on servicing, but with an obvious impact on long term reliability.
Every other manufacturer does the same.

Have a look at the thread I set up on the F10 forum which may assist

http://f10.5post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1228391

Within the thread are both the BMW and ZF oil change instructions.
