Just Installed Dinan: report
Arrived at the dealer to pick up my car. Met with the Dinan specialist who told me the install went fine and to expect the car to feel like 400+hp, more torchey than the M3. When I asked about an additional break-in period, he said, just drive it! He also advised to leave the suspension alone for now, stay with 18” wheels but jettison the stock run-flats.
First few minutes in traffic driving away from the dealer…noted that throttle response more sluggish in the low range – just as others have reported. I’m thinking: this might be a good thing since the car, with x-drive, will still be drivable in the snow with all season tires. My son did not detect any difference in the car except a throatier exhaust at higher rpm. Then, got near the highway on ramp. Turned off DTC. Went into grand-theft auto mode. 1st gear really compresses you to the seat at around 4800 rpm. Definitely have to rev higher before starting off now. 2nd gear is also much much more lively at higher rpm, much more responsive. Found myself in the middle of the on ramp going 60+ in second. That could become a common theme. Incredible power boost in all gears at around 4000 rpm. Finally, my passenger showed the typical signs of anxiety while sitting in a vehicle that he was not currently in control of, and accelerating so fast. Grabbing hold with both hands, face turning red, smiling nervously.... Oil temp runs a little higher than before, just less than 250. With DTC off, there is occasional tire squeal going from 2nd to 3rd and 3rd to 4th at full power. Overall, my car still feels like a 335xi, still the same “ultimate driving machine” feel, but better sounding and with exhilarating torque at mid/high rpm. The deadening of the throttle at the low end will take some getting used to. IMO, for about $4K installed, the Dinan engine upgrade and free-flow exhaust is an incredible deal. It gets you power near that of the M3, with maybe better torque, and complete warranty coverage. I have heard that it can be disappointing when paired with automatic transmission, but I am a true believer now!!

I'm going for the same combo, 335xi, flash plus exhaust.
What are your impressions of the exhaust? BTW, your thread will get more attention if you posted it in the turbo forum, instead of the NA forum. Perhaps you should ask the mods to move it. - Terry |

The exhaust: I am assuming it needs some time to "sweeten" a bit. There is a new, very subtle, low frequency rumble. Peculiar for a 6 cyl engine. The real change is at about 4,000 rpm, a much sportier, loader sound, until the whine at 6000, which blends in with the way it sounded before the mod. I think that sound might mature with time. Overall, it still maintains the discrete attitude of a BMW. Oh, and the start-up sound - it will shiver your spine. Here are some post-mod pic, sorry no upward shots. Maybe I will do some video to capture the sound. Not sure how to post that. And..i just notices, the polishing I did after de-badging looks OK, too!
