Unhappy Grinding noise from MT

I´ve been getting a sort of metal against metal noise from my manual tranny since I bought the car. The sound can be heard in 2nd gear in speeds around 10 - 20 km/h.
I was thinking that it´s a break in issue but I´ve now got 5000km on the odo and the noise is still there.
Anybody else hear this noise?

does the sound happen when you are shifting, ie. from 2nd to 3rd? If it is, then your syncro's might be shot. That's a trans rehaul if it is.

No, the sound isn´t during shifting, only when I´m in 2nd gear.

I was kind of hoping that several people have this issue and that it´s been reported to BMW, my guess is that my dealer is going to be a pain in the ass about this and try to convince me that everything is fine...

I have found that dealers are good about fixing problems if approached properly. I suggest you tell the service writer about the symptoms but not offer a diagnosis. They sometimes grouse about the rate paid by the manufacturer/importer for warranty work but it isn't that bad. If you develop a good relationship (give and take) with the service writer/manager, they will likely help you to say the right words to find relief. It has worked for me for a lot of years!

It seems that I only get the noise when the engine/tranny have reached operating temperature...

When I picked up my car from Munich my tranny started acting up on the drive back. It was "shifting" but not all the way does that make sense? I could shift between gears but the throw was not completeing. I turned off the car and turned it back on and it went away. Any ideas what would have caused this?

If your too slow with the shift work from 1st to 2nd, the RPMs drop down too far during the over-run making it awkward to engage 2nd gear - move the lever into 2nd rapidly (don't break it - just a quick flick straight down from first) and raise the clutch quicker but progressively, will tune out a much smoother change

Bloody hell, tell me about it! Most moody 2nd gear I have ever encountered...

I talked to the mechanics about it today while having my active cruise control realigned. They said they would look at it, and must have adjusted something - including my clutch and it is shifting far better now...

this thread reminds me of a similar issue i had back in 92 with my new e36. notchy & sometimes harsh gear changes in the mt.

service manager immediately pointed to re filling the tranny with a heavier duty oil. job done and problem solved. never had the problem again.

my e46 never had this problem.

I agree that takes more 'attention' than other cars. It doesn't like a limp-wristed shift. A good firm, quick shift and clutch seems to be the way to go.

Any chance your improvement from the cruise adjust was just wishful thinking?

Trust me, I have a very firm grip

Apart from the cruise, they also did look specifically at the shift quality of the transmission. They said that they did adjust some things, and the shift action is vastly improved. The clutch friction point is also changed - I like my friction point down low, I was much higher before. I find this makes it easier to time changes...

Hi jamie
Definitely agree with your comments about the 'bite-point' being low down. I remember test driving an E46 coupe a few years ago which had a manual transmission - hopped in, and went for a drive, I was even surprised myself at how smooth I was able to move off when the bite point was low down

A few weeks later, having settled for the saloon, the bite point was closer the top of the clutch travel, and I stalled twice while trying to move off from the dealer car park, and found myself revving unecessarily in some hasty situations. On the whole, you get used to it. Having it high up means you can be a bit lazy when dropping the clutch for a shift, but definitely cannot be done with a low friction point
