Road and Track compares the 2 series line-up and 1M and chooses....
The 228i. Heh.
They rank them, from best to worst: 1. 228i 2. M2 3. 1M 4. M235i An interesting read. They struggled to choose between the top 2, but the bottom 2 were easy (for them). Interesting article, likely to spark some debate (and hate mail), but I found it worth the read.

Haven't read the article and since I've seen the result and I can probably guess how they came to their conclusion. I get what they are saying when it comes making a value purchase. A 228 ( or 230) with a limited slip diff is a helluva car and a great daily driver. Actually it's the best " daily driver " in the 2 series lineup probably because it's still light and nimble.... And if you did a track day you would have a ton of " mod money " left over .. But at the end of the day there are two cars on that list selling over MSRP still and those are clearly the ones to own. Frankly, if done properly I think you could own an M2 for a year or so at a lower cost than a 228 thanks to it being more in demand. |

228i: First it needs an LSD. Because real wheel drive starts with a proper mech(wether it be electronical or not) limited slip differential.
Then come the brakes. The shocks. Last but not least the SOUND. The x.28i in stock form sounds like nothing, my lawnmower sounds better and I don't even have one. So an exhaust system. And , because an F1 car of 600kgs also has sufficient power and not like 200BHP(no fun at all) , we need an enginetune. Etc etc etc Ah, I hear a 228i passing by, oh no it's the coffeemaker behind me. Found a vid I made of cold start and idle. Filmed with a Blackberry, which is basically a potato with a mic. Last edited by ilovewagons; 06-10-2016 at 10:03 AM.. |

I'd agree with putting the M235 at the bottom, especially when price is factored in. It's the least balanced of the bunch. The suspension and brakes seem overmatched by the power. My 228i had the track package, and it really reminded me of an E36 M3, except for the steering feel. Getting 37 MP(US)G highway didn't bother me either. I'd still rank it below the 1M and M2, 'cause while I understand the point about them both being ridiculous overkill, sometimes that's what you want out of life. For me, the M2 is on top, 'cause 1 - it's not trying to kill you and 2 - I'm prejudiced on account of owning one. |

I didn't find the 1M overkill in terms of power, mine was stock with N55 midpipe. Just a quick car. M2 ditto. But a car never can be 'fast enough' in my book lol. Overkill would be McLaren 650/675/688 stuff or 488/F12(TdF) imho. And I want overkill! Cheers Robin |

1M was spot on, on every detail IMHO, raw, fast, agile, alive
Yes the M2 is faster, but it doesn`t feel that way, silent, almost too smooth, less steering feel, less feel in anything else, it`s more Clinton style I would say, a Slick Willy |

I just spent 3 days in a 228 loaner car while the M2 was at the dealer. It's a fun little car, but it just feels half way there. I guess it's about half the price, so that's fitting. On stock tires it didn't take much to get the back end out.

I read the title and was expecting to discover they chose a Honda Civic Type R, no dice.
