Infiniti vs BMW with new turbo 6!!!

I'll share this in a few forums to gather some interest.

Since BMW finally "Agreed to move with the times" switching from Naturally aspirated inline 6, V8 and V10s to turbocharging (due to stricter emissions, the need for more power in the newer generation and efficiency in a world with increase oil prices), they contradicted their once belief that: "turbocharging is a cheap way of engineering power".
This set the trend for its German rival Audi and MB to follow suit.

Their test mule was the n54 engine, first released in the 335i which is widely regarded as the modern day 2JZ (Supra) and RBDETT (Skyline GTR) with a straight 6, 3litre twin turbo. This engine as we all know is highly underrated and has an abundance of tuning potential, even after a decade after its release, it is still being developed by after market tuners.
This soon evolved to the n55 engine, utilising a twin-scroll instead of two individual turbochargers, and now into the b58 engine.
The current F8x M3/4 engine is derived from the n54/55 platform (as a test mule, they worked out all the problems of these engines, learnt from it and improved all aspects that were weak).
In fact surprisingly, the entire F-series BMW range all utilise forced induction, from the 1.3litre to the hybrid i8 to even the Halo ///M's.

The leap of change, made Audi follow with a supercharge 3litre V6, in the current B8 S4/S5, and MB to release the twin turbo V6 in the C400 and C450amg derivative to compete with the 335i.

Now finally, it looks as though Nissan and its luxury brand "Infiniti" will join this club. The Infiniti Q50, a direct rival to the 3-series, A4 and C-class will release its own engine, a 3litre V6 twin turbo with outputs of 300hp (225kw) and 400hp (300kw) variants....and I For one am SUPEREXCITED!!!!
It was rumoured that they would source the engine from MB (found in the c400/c450) since their recent agreement to share platform, but it seems like Nissan decided to abandon that idea and grow some balls.
Besides the GTR, it seemed like Nissan lost its soul and popularity since the 80s/90s era when they pulled the plug on the Sylvias (180s and 200sx), Skylines, turbo Z in favour of naturally aspirated engines.

They have now revived that with the announcement of the VR30DDTT which will power the Q50/Q60 and make its way to other future model line-ups.

This will truly put some smiles back on fans as well as the aftermarket tuners (especially the JDM tuners who've been twiddling their thumbs waiting for the Japanese car manufacturer to come up with something like this).
I can't wait to see it once release, because I know the tuning potential will be amazing!!!

Great article! I agreed that Japan car manufacturers have been concentrating on making more family & environmental friendly vehicles for the past decade as opposed to weekend warrior track cars. It was nice to see the revitalise of the Toyota 86 along with the introduction of the BRZ. The 86 are fun cheap rear wheel drive car but the stock engine output is disappointing. I guess that leaves room for aftermarket tuners like HKS & GReddy sell turbo induction kit for these cars.
I myself am looking forward to see legendary Supra reborn & all new mighty RX9 in coming years.

I love those glory days of the jap sports cars. Bring back mitsubishi gto and nissan 200sx on top of the reborn nsx, supra and we can say we back. Problem is the price of these cars. Hopefully when my kid is 18 these cars will be affordable

I wouldn't compare a modern day BMW motor to the supra motor. The dawgs Motor is pretty much indestructible, Unlike the BMW.

I wonder if my old bell bottoms jeans will ever be popular again!

How sexy does the new Supra & RX9 looks on the pic! I know they are only concept at this stage and will never look like that for production model. One could only hope the production model will not stray away too far from the concept.

If you like concepts, here's the next generation Nissan GTR R36 unveiled at The Goodwood Festival of Speed 2014 in England
