Stone stuck behind brake disc?

Today when I was driving slowish there was a scraping sound coming from the left side of my car which got worse the more I slowed down or turning a corner, but driving at 60-70mph it wasn't there, so I stopped and had a look around but couldn't see anything. I then tried reversing and braking to dislodge any possible stones, drove off and couldn't hear it any more, so I drive quite a few miles more and slowed down on smaller roads, it still wasn't there, happy days I thought! Then a few miles further I slowed down and it was back, and the slower I went it got really loud this time, and as I came to a stop there was a loud pop and a metallic clanging noise like something metal fell off the car! I looked around but nothing had fallen off and it's been fine since.

So was this a stone caught between the disc and backing plate?

Yup sounds like a stone I think, big problem on the F8X platform too and mine sounded precisely like this.

You could hear it loads travelling at 10-30mph but higher wind and tyre noise takes over with the window down. Stone worked its way out after quite a few days.

Does sound like a stone. Can be a horrid noise. Perhaps it dislodged and sat in a 'safe' place for a few miles, before dropping back in between, and sounding off again.

Talking of noises, I drove down to my dealer after a heavy overnight storm, lots of road debris. Pulling up at the garage there was a horrible sound coming out from under the car, clearly in the o/s rear wheel area. I suspected a bit of branch or similar had got caught. Mention it to the service desk, as I couldn't see anything obvious and it was going up on the ramp. A few minutes later service guy brings in a smallish twig they'd found jammed in the brake. Was hard to believe something so small and relatively soft had made so much noise on slowing down to a halt.

A few days! it was driving me mad just for that hour or less!!

Wonder if it damages the rear side of the disc much?

Are they the exact blades BMW supply (without the BMW badges or packaging)?

Yes I believe so. I bought some a few months ago and they are brilliant (well as good as OEM - probably because they are!)

I had this (stuck stone) once on my E90. The BMW mobile service guy that came and fixed it said it was a very regular occurrence.

I've had E90's and F30 for 7 years and never had it once!

Nick Murray describes the problem here on his M4. Easy fix too.

Go to around 1:20.........
