Lack of mechanical abilities, cheap and BMW are like oil/water as they don't mix well together.

Looks like most of the expensive stuff has been taken care of already. You can add water pump, t-stat and coils to the list of things that are going to break soon enough.

Water pump loves to go out on these cars. When you replace that you must do water pump and t-stat (thermostat) together. Coils (ignition coils) and plugs (spark plugs) are regular maintenance like oil change (at 7K to keep the car happy). Not too expensive. General consensus is coils @ every 50K and plugs @ 25K, if tuned. Otherwise do them once in two years. Since almost all big ticket items are taken care of, you should be fine for a long long time.

OP, visit your local harbor freight and pick up some basic tools (1/4 and 3/8 socket sets [in metric], open wrenches, screwdrivers, jack-stands, etc). You'll be amazed at how much you can do with $100 of tools, some good internet sleuthing skills, and few hours of patience. There are step by step DIY tutorials for most of this stuff. You can do it, but not without some tools.

The only expensive thing you'll need to do what you listed above (plus things like water pump/T-stat replacement) is a low profile floor jack ($140), which will be annoying to store without a garage.

Gents, for those of us that are somewhat/moderately mechanically inclined this makes all the sense in the world. However for those that don't know the difference between a ratchet, wrench and screwdriver, I would suggest for their sanity and the safety of the world at large, take it to a professional.

Case in point, and true story, BTW--
Daughter- I got a flat tire the other week, what should I do?
Dad- Buy a replacement tire and take it to a tire shop to have it mounted on the wheel.
Daughter- Wheel?
Dad- The metal thing the tire was attached to.
Daughter- Oh, I threw that away with the tire.

True story. Love her to death, but a mechanic she's not.

Ha! That is funny. Since the OP found the E90 forums as a source of assistance, I am assuming SOME level of technical competence. It is true though, DIY is not for everybody...
However, I think that most people could do the simple jobs if they were willing to learn. The Daughter in your story would have known better had she googled it first.

OP, if you are, mechanically speaking, an idiot, then you probably shouldn't start pulling components out of your (extremely) complex german machine. However, if you are a smart enough fellow that is willing to spend a few hours learning what you're doing and another few hours implementing it then I certainly think it's worth an effort. All of us wrenchers, DIYers and BMW enthusiasts got started somehow.

None of this is to say that Muncie21 is wrong about anything he said, but if you feel up for it then try it. If you don't like it, then sell your BMW
Just be willing to put in the extra time because you're a beginner.
Good luck, OP

If you're not mechanically inclined, do not buy a used bmw. I've owned 4 335i's for ~50-70k miles and heres a list of what i've replaced with all the work done by me.

-Valve Cover w/ Gasket and Bolts 85k
-PCV Check Valve 65k
-Alternator 98k
-Waterpump & Thermostat 100k
-High Pressure Fuel Pump 100k
-Low Pressure Fuel Pump 100k
-02 Sensors 100k
-Low & High Pressure Fuel Sensors 100k
-Crank seal w/ pulley bolts 95k
-Belt, tensioners, and pulleys 95k
-Coolant reservoir, overflow line, and radiator feed and return lines 90k
-Carbon Valve Blasting 100k
-Both turbochargers replaced ~80k
-Front upper and lower control arms replaced with M3 arms 90k
-Both Vanos Solenoids 80k
-Both oil cooler housing gaskets 90k
-Throttle body to manifold gasket 100k
-NGK 5992 Spark Plugs changed every 10k
-Coil Packs changed at 85k
-Front upper and lower control arms 95k
-Rear main seal 100k
-Clutch, flywheel, pilot bearing 100k
-And a few random coolant lines

I'm probably forgetting a few things, insanely enough i've never had any injectors fail (Knock on wood) and 3 out of the 4 cars had full bolt ons throughout the entire ownership. One had vargas stage 1s with meth.
