Happened at motorway cruising speed and no loss of control or anything. I was actually able to drive for a few hundred metres.

Did you have a spare with you or wait for recovery? Not sure the tyre gunk would be much use there!

Taking me home. My wheels and tyres are sitting in my garage. These were Mark's wheels and tyres that I'd just bought!

Yeah I think it's safe to guess that some sort of heat fatigue damaged it. It's a clockwise track and so the front right would take the biggest pounding.
