Lightbulb What oil do you use and how do you like it?

What oil do you use and how is it? I'd like to change my oil in between recommended intervals and use a more robust oil than what the dealers use. Please help me with this poll/thread.

Bump. Even if you just get it done at the dealer, you can select the BMW oil. Thanks!

Thanks fellas. Keep em coming. And feel free to suggest any oil that you use and why if it's not listed here.

I used to use Royal Purple until I found out it's not fully synthetic unless you get HPS. Then it just didn't make sense in terms of pricing. Plus, RP seemed to burn much more than the other oils.

I do an in-between dealer change, with LiquiMoly.

Will probably be exclusively LiquiMoly after factory maintenance is over.

Why did you choose LiquiMoly? I used it as an alternative to Castrol TWS in my M5 in the past.

However, why did you choose it over Amsoil or Motul?

Which reminds me, I forgot about Total Quartz. Will add it now. Crap, how do you add another option in the poll after the fact?

I opted to change the oil after 1200mi breakin and searched my local area for a trusted BMW indie. They exclusively use LiquiMoly + MOS2 and I noticed the engine running smoother after the change. Been going to them ever since for the 5000 mi change between 10000mi dealer intervals. Although I think I will start doing it myself. The indie has a roster of old client BMWs (one just passed 400k), so I will defer to them for things like this. I plan on keeping this car forever.

Read up a little more on LM and it seems to get great reviews, including excellent independent Blackstone Lab results.

Honestly, not very engineer-minded but this is all good enough for me.

Gotcha. Thanks! What filters are you using and did you get a magnetic drain plug?

How much are the oil changes?

I think they use whatever the recommended stock filter is. No magnetic drain plug.

The LM oil changes are $140....a lot, I know lol. I don't wrench at all but will spend some time with a car buddy to do it myself next time.

Holy! Dude it's cheaper at the dealer!

You can get LM from bavauto for about $35-40 @ 5 liters. At 6.5L, the cost of oil is $45-50. BMW oil is ~$7/qt, so similarly priced.

The filter kit is about $7.

That means they're charging about $80-90 for labor.

Let me know if any of the LMs in the snapshot is the one you get from the independent shop.

Thanks man!

I plan to use the dealer recommended oil until no warranty. If I was going to use a non recommended dealer oil, I would go with red line.

Mywifes335 lol yea I know. Dealer oil would be only $80 if I had to pay out of pocket. But they don't carry LM.

The oil the indie uses is LM longlife (leichtlauf) Hi Tech 5W40

I run a thicker weight than Oem, so when I took it in for its year service, I promptly dumped the oil a day later, looked like watery milk.

Asked a friend who was a tech a few years ago at bmw, said the oil is stored in 55 gallon drums, gets contaminated all the time, the oil changes fall to the lowest on the pole sort of speak.

Free is free, but not for me.

Oy, yes, it's called bulk oil.

So you just don't do the "free" service at all?

What viscosity do you run? We've got the same mods so really interested.

Castrol Edge 0w40 Euro Formula not in the options..? I just changed mine yesterday with this. According to castrol page 0w40 is a recommended oil and abides by BMW standards LL-01

Well, I don't know what they do, I flush my brake fluid every track day same with oil, tranny and diff every 5 or 6 track days. I go through brakes and rotors like most people go through gas. I run 0w 40 castrol edge. I rather do the maitence myself, since I am the one driving it.

Damn. That's great! Um...would you ever feel compelled to write a DIY on these?

I haven't done any wrench turning since the E90.

What size punch do you use for the brake caliper retaining pins?
Do you put any silicon grease on the back of the pads?
How much oil do you out in after draining?
Do you use a magnetic drain plug? If so, where'd you get it?
How do you change the tranny and gear oil on the 235i?
Is the Castrol edge 0w40 full synthetic? And why did you choose to go with lower viscosity startup and higher viscosity at op temp?

I know....it's a lot.

Thanks!

I truly didn't know Castrol still made a full synthetic for US Market export.

Can I still edit the poll?

On occasion i find 0w40 euro blend at walmart on sale for 23.XX for 5qt containers but it goes pretty quick . If its there i buy it.. I stocked up last time and have enough for 3 oil changes.. >$100 + 3 oil filters for 3 changes is a bargain

Pretty damn good!
How do you compare it with the other oils listed?

Seems like a couple guys prefer running 0w40 vs 5w30. Is it better for the engine?

TBH i have no idea... I am not a learned man in the area of engine oil. Im not exactly sure why but i thought i read that recommended oil weight for the 2014 models was 5w30 and 2015 on was 0w40. I wonder if that was when the recommended oil changed from castrol to shell but it doesnt make sense due to the fact that Castrol makes the Edge 0w40 Euro blend. Surely tolerances in the motor havnt changed but if someone could chime in i would be interested why.

Oh man! I'm the one in the dark.... I've got a 2014 with 9k miles on it and only had 2 oil changes done, both by the dealer.

Shit, if 0w40 is recommended I'm switching then.

Thanks drpoo. Anyone else please chime in on the 0w40...
