There are tons of LEO's on the actual Dragon. It's pretty fun though. There are a lot of alternate routes around the area up there that are more fun I think because there's less traffic and LEO's waiting for you. I'm always up for some mountain road driving.

Tail of Dragon is over rated actually but has become a bucket list thing. It is worth it to come from SC?............ Yes- the roads getting to ToD are the real treat here. Be sure to travel the Cherohala Skyway, also in the neighborhood. The moonshiners highway Hwy 28) from Walhalla is best approach. Also Blue Ridge Parkway at Pisgah has special roads- Hwy 215 and Hwy 281. pm me if you want detailed ideas. I get to drive these roads daily- the reason I even own a BMW.

I had to drive to coastal SC from Florida and drove over afterwards. I felt it was worth the trip, especially for the other roads mentioned by Three Pedal Steve.
