AFE intake on STOCK tune? Any issues?

Good morning,

New member here... I've looked through a ton of threads but can't seem to get a straight answer.

I plan to get an AFE stage 2 intake (open intake design) with dry flow filter. This will be run with a completely stock engine/tune for a while... mainly for sound reasons and to pick up a couple whp top end. I plan to get a JB4 moving forward for those that are going to recommend it... but that may be a few months down the road (end of this year prob.)

Reason why I bring this up, is I see a lot of threads with fellow members getting CELs and bucking with the BMS intake... not so much with the other intakes. I've narrowed down my option to the AFE because I like the design and look (and the fact that its open intake.) My favorite was actually the AWE (all the CF looks great, but the price point and fact that its closed made me look elsewhere for what I want out of it.)

Any feedback from MEMBERS with AFE open intake on stock tune? And although I highly appreciate the vendors input, a few seem to be skewed towards certain intakes.

Basically, just looking for simple answer of how the AFE intakes are running on F30s with just intake (no other performance mods). Any cold start issues, bucking, CELs, etc.

Thanks for the input

I have the AFE open intake no CEL. Seems to work just like stock with a lot more noise.

My first mod was the same AFE stage 2 intake with the dry filter. Not a big power gain, but install was 10 minutes and the sound is well worth it IMO. No issues at all. Go for it!

I actually just installed this intake myself yesterday, dry filter as well with the rest of the car bone stock. I was scared of a CEL on start-up, but have driven about 300 miles since and had no issues. The sound is great; butt dyno can tell no difference, but I knew that going into this anyway.

Back to the CEL again, I can't say about the long run though since my JB4 will be here any day now lol.

Just an update:

I bought the AFE intake from Mike @ X-PH. It was the cheapest price out there and he has a good reputation on here. Transaction was processed immediately and shipping was extremely fast. Thank you Mike.

Installed the intake - only issue I had initially was the MAF sensor wasn't sitting flush on the intake pipe. I was playing around with it for a bit (actually had to go back and put it back in because it was not flush initially)... i was a little concerned about the fit and finish, but it popped right in after playing around. aside from that... install was simple. Dropped right in and fit was terrific.

Have driven about 150 miles since install. No CELs. Drives and idles just like stock, obviously louder when boost hits. Sound is terrific. Turbo/diverter valve are definitely louder, but not obnoxious. What I was looking for.

Don't feel much in the way of a power adder... I feel a little more torque/power at a lower RPM range honestly (2k-4k). Power comes on just as smooth and with the added sound, it was just what I wanted.

Highly recommend the intake

Thank you all in this thread for the help and feedback.

Just in case anyone was interested... I did a baseline dyno today. Car is bone stock aside from the AFE intake.

I pulled 273 whp, 298 wtrq

For the most part yes. Approximately one in every 20 customer need a tune to hide the CEL
