PDC Retrofit

I'm thinking about retrofitting PDC on my car... I searched and read some posts that this would be very expensive, but I wanted to research and see how bad it really was. To my surprise, realoem has part numbers for European models which they sell as a kit.

These are the 2 parts needed as indicated here: REALOEM
66200399633
66200393938

Both of these parts together would cost about $250. My question is, how hard would it be to connect everything together? I wouldn't mind doing this myself just as long as I have a set of instructions!

It depends on a lot of things. For example iDrive? If so, you need a program update for sure as it shows the image in the screen. If not iDrive, do you have the control cluster just above the ashtray (for heated seats, rear sunshade)? If not, you need to buy one specific for your car. I have the rear sensors and was considering retrofitting the front ones, but looks to be complicated and requires drilling into the bumper (unless you get the license plate mounted one which is horrible).

I don't have iDrive, so that should simplify things a bit. I do have the control cluster above the ashtray and have 2 false buttons which aren't being used at the moment. The bumper is no issue as I bought one with the PDC holes in it already. My concern is the wiring that needs to be done..

Wiring is not an issue according to the shop I use. However, the programming is indeed an issue because the PDC retrofit program is not available on the diagnostic computer yet.

Then you need a new cluster for sure with the addition of the RPC button. Check realOEM to find the part number you need for the new cluster. http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...48&hg=61&fg=25 I want to say the cluster is about $65, as I wnated to try a heated seat retrofit unil I found out the seats are not prewired for heating.

I don't think the retrofit kit integrates as thoroughly as the factory system does. It has its own speaker and doesn't do the iDrive display and whatnot.

The retrofit kits are pretty straightforward wiring-wise; the only tricky part will be drilling the bumper for the sensors.

If the BMW one doesn't work out you could always install a universal kit, too, which is usually just rear sensors that pull power from the reverse-light wire and have a little speaker to mount under the parcel shelf. Nothin' to it.

So without iDrive, does it just beep... and beep faster as you come close to an obstacle?

I want the Front PDC retrofit as well. I have iDrive. I know that out-of-USA-market E90s have the front display in their iDrive screen, just as USA market E60s have the front display.

I would love an answer, I know I brought this topic up back in 2005 and everyone at that time said it was next to impossible. Which at the time I seriously doubted. Hopefully the information is now available.

Thanks for chiming in, Kev. I've contacted Evan at Tischer to see if he can provide some insight as well. It seems like the 335xi can possibly use this retrofit kit, but he's checking to see what the difference is between a 335i and xi. Here is the front PDC kit for anyone interested in it. You can check online (Tischer/Crown Auto) to see if these parts can be bought from a US dealer.

Good looking out - thanks for the link!

It seems that the button is not needed for rear PDC. From what I researched, it looks like it is only for when you need to activate front PDC.

That's what I would assume. When your car is in reverse, it would activate the PDC... That's how it works on my Mini. I'm still confused as to why I would need a PDC button on my console since the Mini doesn't have one.

FYI, I've included a Z4 PDC retrofit guide:

(12:21:08 PM) Evan at Tischer: someone else was asking about this...
(12:21:11 PM) Evan at Tischer: here's the deal...
(12:21:18 PM) Evan at Tischer: the part #'s you gave me...
(12:21:22 PM) Evan at Tischer: they are not listed for your vehicle
(12:21:28 PM) Aoshi chan X: ah I see
(12:21:28 PM) Evan at Tischer: or any 335i's for that matter
(12:21:37 PM) Evan at Tischer: so I honestly dont know if those kits would work or not...
(12:21:39 PM) Evan at Tischer: but..
(12:22:02 PM) Evan at Tischer: bmw lists a separate pdc retrofit for your vehicle...
(12:22:11 PM) Evan at Tischer: but it's not as cool as the others that come on the vehicle...
(12:22:21 PM) Aoshi chan X: yeah
(12:22:21 PM) Evan at Tischer: it's integrated w/ the license plate holder
(12:22:23 PM) Aoshi chan X: the license plate one right
(12:22:24 PM) Aoshi chan X: hahaha
(12:22:24 PM) Evan at Tischer: yeah

(12:23:38 PM) Aoshi chan X: 66206982388
(12:23:43 PM) Aoshi chan X: could you tell me what that part # does

(12:25:34 PM) Aoshi chan X: http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...17&hg=66&fg=05 <-- that is what I am looking at right now
(12:27:26 PM) Evan at Tischer: yeah it's the control unit for the pdc system...
(12:28:29 PM) Evan at Tischer: it looks like you'd need 66206982396 if adding this to your vehicle...
(12:28:54 PM) Evan at Tischer: and yeah, you'd need the black sensors since your vehicle is black
(12:29:01 PM) Evan at Tischer: don't need painted
(12:29:15 PM) Aoshi chan X: which is 66200393938 <-- that one?
(12:29:55 PM) Aoshi chan X: do I need the Decoupling ring pdc torque converter lmao
(12:29:55 PM) Aoshi chan X: 66206934308
(12:30:01 PM) Aoshi chan X: and all those small parts

(12:32:16 PM) Evan at Tischer: those are painted to match the vehicle if they are any other color than black
(12:32:41 PM) Evan at Tischer: and yeah, you'll need the decoupling rings...they are just gaskets for the sensors
(12:32:43 PM) Evan at Tischer: :-)
(12:32:55 PM) Aoshi chan X: oh ok
(12:33:00 PM) Aoshi chan X: do you think this retrofit is possible
(12:33:06 PM) Evan at Tischer: i would think so
(12:33:18 PM) Aoshi chan X: another round of re-programming
(12:33:20 PM) Aoshi chan X: hahhaa
(12:33:26 PM) Evan at Tischer: but it looks like you'd need to get everything individually
(12:33:33 PM) Evan at Tischer: hahaha and yeah, more programming unfortunately

(12:33:39 PM) Aoshi chan X: nice, now,
(12:33:40 PM) Aoshi chan X: http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...18&hg=61&fg=25

(12:34:33 PM) Evan at Tischer: hmmm
(12:34:41 PM) Evan at Tischer: i'd assume you may need all new locks, handles, etc.
(12:34:52 PM) Evan at Tischer: control unit, misc. parts. programming, etc
(12:34:52 PM) Evan at Tischer: lol
(12:35:30 PM) Aoshi chan X: hahahaha
