Map Updates for pre LCI

I have become very confused about how I can update my maps using a USB so I asked BMW and this is the answer I got:

"Thanks for your email about BMW ConnectedDrive services.
The information provided by my colleague is correct, your car can have the USB map updates after purchasing the option from the store. Regrettably, the option is currently unavailable due to essential maintenance and an announcement will be made on the BMW UK website when it’s back available.
For your convenience, please find attached the instruction manual for updating maps by USB, which you can look through ready for when they are available."

Didn't realise that I had to pay for them and wonder when they will be available

No, that only relates to LCI cars with over the air updates.

AFAIK Pre LCI cars have no free updates.

You can update for free yourself though

I have queried BMW about charging me for updates, I'll copy the reply if it is of interest.

Yeah pre LCI you'll need to update via a USB stick. It's a relatively simple process to install.
Just plug it in & follow instructions on the idrive screen, or get them to do it for you if you're at the dealer. (assuming you purchase an official version!)

Not particularly impressed with the 2016 map tbh (for the north west uk anyway) - out of date on numerous road network changes.

How did you get the maps downloaded onto a USB? I have been told tht the facility is currently not available after I asked why the update did not work when I tried

Did mine at the dealers just recently - not sure why the facility wouldn't be available?

I upgraded my LCI Business Nav maps via USB last week.

Logged in via https://www.bmw-connecteddrive.co.uk...psManualUpdate

The Update Manager is a java-based program that downloads the ~16GB map file. Had some problems getting the Update Manager to write directly to a USB drive so ended up locating the map download on the C: drive and manually copying it over. Worked fine - took about 40 minutes to do the full upgrade in the car.

I don't think pre LCI vehicles have this option available - in my case 62 plate with professional multimedia this option is not available so in order to update maps i had to download (you can buy through bmw or other retailers/forums) maps and FSC code to usb drive and do it this way

It is quite easy to do anyways
