20k/year in a 340i
I'm currently in an F30 335d, but could really do with a Touring.
I do 20k miles/year. In the last 12 months I've spent £2500 on fuel. So if the 340i has 25% worse consumption it will cost an extra £625 per year in fuel. Or £1875 over 3 years. Now, the difference between an identically specced 335d and 340i on Broadspeed is £39154-£36793=£2361 ie more than the £1875 above. Drawbacks with the 340i are 25% more trips to the pumps and less torque. But I get a car that is not on stilts, with twin exhausts and RWD (although the X-drive has been very nice throughout the winter). Is it that simple? Am I missing something, or am I mad? Obviously there's the risk of fuel prices rising again. |

Your 25% is probably more like 35%...

It is personal preference, for me launching the xdrive isn't getting old. I came from a powerful petrol and got fecked off with hunting shell garages every 250 miles.
I also do 20k+ miles a year, so i guess you also spend 95% on A roads or motorways, so is that 5% of the time worth the extra £625? If you think so, then get the 340i, lives to short to wonder 'what if?'. Buy the petrol. |

Even at the higher 35% costs are the same? No decision needed, GET THE 340i, GET IT GET IT GET IT.
Also may I add a thankyou....you've just done my man math for me as I was thinking 335d or 340i and was prepared to pay extra costs but as it turns out I won't have to, I'm definitely getting a 340i now I have much to learn |

Whats the 340 going to be worth vs the 335 when you come to sell it?

So are you comparing low 335d returns to best case 340i returns? Would you change your driving style to get 30's, if not could you accept say 28mpg? |

I live about 3 miles from the M8 so do 95% motorway/A road driving. To give you an idea how gently its been driven the first service could have been at 20500 miles if I'd left it to the dash. Last 330d I picked up with 4.5k on the clock was in for its first at 17k. Honest John's Real World MPG for the 335d is 43mpg. I don't see how that is possible. Now you've got my thinking, is it worth the risk? Hmmmm. |

The 340i has loads of torque and from low down so you shouldn't miss the diesel. I don't.
It's seriously quick in real world driving. Not as fast when launching as a 335dx but I had the clear edge over a 435d 40-80mph last week. The engine is a beaut and the noise is only a small aspect of it. It's not just what it does it's the way it does it. The 340i has better power to weight ratio than the 335d with a lighter front end whilst losing that slight xdrive body roll which I felt when test driving. Mine is an M Sport model with Adaptive M Suspenion. No idea how the 340i would feel if those were taken away. However my 340i definitely feels better when cornering than the 335d xdrive that i test drove IN THE DRY and the 330d sdrive that I previously owned in all weathers. If you're 335d has only managed 38mpg over the long term then you're probably a similar right foot driver to me so you will be looking at no more 30mpg in the 340i touring. Unless you tickle it all the time forget low 30's. It's unrealistic! I'm at 29mpg with various road type driving and 70% comfort mode over first 1k. I've only red lined it a handful of times as running in. I'm expecting more like 27/28mpg over the long term after opening it up more often post 1200 miles. Good luck

27/28 from a 340i is not that great IMO. considering the lack of real power if out of town work and long journeys are being done. M6 GC CP gave 26 MPG averaged over 10K miles, and that went.

Well the fact that you are asking us all on here clearly shows what you really want and will you spend the next 3 years regretting it if you don't switch?
While the 340 is down on torque to the 335d it still has 330 odd ft/lb from 1400rpm so not exactly lacking. |

There are a number of threads on here with the 335d actually having better economy than 330d xdrive. Yes go for the 340i, just don't fool yourself with economy. Get the car you want to own and drive. At end of day it's only money. |

I've averaged 34.4mpg over 4,466 miles according to Fuelly, probably thanks to not doing too much town driving. Tbh though I wouldn't care if it was averaging under 30 because I'm having fun. 6 pot BMWs are not bought for economy, if you want economy get a Polo Blue Motion

As I do 18-20k miles per year I am reading with interest as just ordered a 440i GC. I would be happy with 28mpg anything more is a bonus.
Buy what you want as you will only spend more in the future changing it. When spending £35-40k on a car does it really matter if you save £650 a year on fuel? Just my thoughts.

I do 20k - 30k pa.
Im moving from circa 45 - 50mpg to 20-28mpg when my S8 arrives. Perhaps a silly move, but you only live once. |
