not happy vent time

Some Muppet decided to empty few boxes of large screws on the A30 in blackwater.

Result puncture in a rear right in middle of the tyre. Annoying as it could be repaired but tyre cracked on the inside while being removed. Joy of 35 255 rfts.

Now to hunt for a tyres

Question see what the opinion is

At what point would you swap both rears. Currently the good rear has 5.5mm / 6mm left so question is that too far gone to be imbalanced with a new fresh one on other side or just replace the one damaged.

and thats putting aside the gauge the screw put in the actual wheel on the inside. Need to sand it down and see how deep it is

Nasty mate!

I'd replace both rears and sell the good one with 6mm to recoup about half the cost of one of them.

Thats one thought or for sods law principle keep it in case of annother puncture.

4 mm difference is getting to be a lot I suppose shame I knew shoudl have done my winters swap out this weekend.

Would have been fine winters where much cheaper and smaller and non rdft

At least price is less that I expected £180 each remember last set of 19" I looked at where around £250

Just hope I dont need a new rim as the gauge is pretty big at least not deeper than a 1 or 2mm

Why would you replace a tyre that is not even half worn, just replace the damaged one. You will not notice any imbalance whatsoever

New ones only have 8mm, so it's 2mm difference. It depends if you're strapped for cash or not, if you can easily afford it then might as well change both so then they're both good for a long time. Otherwise you'll eventually need to change one at 2mm while the other has 4mm left.

this is the conundrum.

If a new one is 8mm then I probbaly go with new rubber could not remember the starting depth.

Hopefully the good one will survive being removed.

Now to work out if the wheel is ok.

Did a quick sanding to work out the damage. its about size of a 5p/20p coin.

Deepest about 1m no sign on the inside of the wheel.

Hopefully some metal filler and primer and it be ok. Otherwise will be really pissed

Before and After quick sand

Preaching to the choir

Same happened to me last month in the F15 x5. It's got 7000 on clock. tyre monitor lights up like Xmas tree sure enough passenger side rear flat. Nail.

Sadly car has the optional 21" m-accessory 310M bicolour wheels.

You can see where I'm going with this right???

Anyway 3mm difference between new tyre and opposite side. So recommendation was to replace both.

And this is where I make you feel a LOT better......

Run flats on my rears are " PIRELLI P Zero 325/30R21 108Y" cost per corner (fitted and balanced) £435 yes I said per corner

I shed a tear that day

wow, never seen anything like that before. How many miles did you do in it from puncture? Also never heard of a tyre 'cracking' on removal

Ouch that is eye wattering

Been thinking of a X4 or X6 as next car might stick to smaller wheels though

Problem was when tyre got hit it held pressure so no TPMS erros anything. Only realized after about couple of hundred yards as opened the window and heard a knocking sound.

Stopped checked could not see anything on the wheels first thought it was front. maybe a stone / debris since no reason to think puncture as no TPMS or signs of loss pressure.

Could not see anything and as was on the A30 nowhere to stop apart from bad layby so turned around and limped back to civilaisation so in total a mile and half probably.

Got the car up on a jack at a car place and then spotted the damm thin in the rear

When they pulled the tyre off on the inside on the side wall there was a crack. Probably from the tooling

Pitted area is where the screw tip has impacted on the alloy after every revolution.
