Best roof mounted bike carrier

I'm a mountain biker, has anyone got a roof mounted bike carrier and which do you think is the best for a f31?

If your planning on buying the carrier from somewhere like halfords. Take the bike with you.

I found that my lapierre doesn't fit very well in the 591 carrier and the front wheel sits right on the very edge of the carrier.

My car is a saloon. Bars and rack are the same. The footpack and fitting kit vary dependant on weather you have roof rails or not.

Bike is 26". Size wise the rack fits fine, the problem comes in positioning the clamp. My bike has internal cable routing and the cables come out of the frame just where the clamp wants to be located. So becuase I have to move the clamp position it pushes the bike forward to the very front of the rack.

We have a similar problem with my brothers bike because the rear shock position gets in the way of the clamp.

Is your bike a FS? Thule 561 is another option.

Yeah FS. I carry all 3 with mine, HT, FS and road bike. The others fit perfect, it's only really the FS that I have issues with.

I can still get the wheel strap on it though so the bikes still secure. I tend to put a bungy through the front wheel as well, becuase its not properly in the holder it tends to develop a wobble at motorway speeds which the bungy stops.

The 561 may be the better bet then, albeit you need to remove the front wheel. Somebody had the BMW branded version of this for sale in the classified section. The 561 is also the best option for anyone driving long distance or motorway driving with carbon framed bikes.

Well as it happens said FS is now in a skip in France somewhere after the carbon frame cracked.
Apparently Lapierre are giving me the new 27.5" equivalent as its under warranty. So we will have to see my bike rack issues may be resolved by the new bike.

Don't know really, sent the bike in to have the frame bearings replaced and they found the crack behind the bottom bracket.

You should be able to slide the arm assembly backwards along the rack by loosenong a few bolts underneath. These bolts are made to be user adjustable in case you need to reverse the sense of the rack (ie if you fit 4 bikes alternating fore/aft then unless you reverse 2 of them you'll find the locks on the wrong side)

I have Atera kit (for roof and tow bar mounted rack) and can recommend them.

http://www.roofbox.co.uk/ - supply both Thule and Atera. Great service and worth calling them first to discuss.

+1 for Atera bars and bike carriers. I have the ASR bars and GIRO AF+ bike carriers.

I understand they manufacture the OEM ones for BMW, MB, VW amongst others.

I was looking at Thule but I don't think they have a system that fits the '16 428i Gran Coupe yet; at least not what I can find on their site. Yakima's new products lists 4 series 4 door as an option so I'm currently researching their stuff. Anyone out there with a 4 series Gran Coupe with racks willing to share pics and details? Thanks!

Yakima Front Loader is the BEST bike rack I have ever owned. The rack is adjustable to fit ANY wheel size from a road bike all the way up to a 29er. I have carried MANY types of bikes on this bike rack - it is very sturdy and reliable.
