So which security to go for?
Sorry I cocked up with these threads...
Curious as to which options folk go for. Objectives could be: 1) Reduce likelihood of car theft - this seems to have been exclusively via key theft from the house, so either one bolsters home security (we move house shortly so this will be done then), or security of car from theft with keys. 2) Increase liklihood of car recovery: Is this really desirable or needed if above objective is met? We have Car replacement cover for 4 years so is recovery of a stolen vehicle what we really want? 3) Evidence to prove fault in event of accident/incident/road rage etc: This one is obvious I guess. Solutions that come to mind are: 1) Additional car security by way of additional immobilser/alarm. Theft via key cloning using the OBD doesn't seem to be a F30 issue, so I was thinking the of Ghost system which just needs a code using dash/wheel mounted buttins 2) Full GPS tracker system 3) Screen mounted camera system, like Blackvue or Thinkware. 4) Additional house security Anything else? I'm currently thinking dashcam and additional immobilser, and maybe some general house security. If it's knicked after all that then that's what insurance is for and I'd rather have new one.

CCTV to cover the car I guess. They will take it if they want it. But more likely to go to another house if yours has CCTV.
Dash Cam 100%. Read something somewhere about change barrels in french doors, etc. To stop the locks being snapped. Which is apparently a common way to gain access. Most important leave the keys where they can find them if they do come in the house. They are welcome to them don't want them anywhere near my kids! |

Hi
May have been my post. ABS locks on all your house doors are a great investment. Anti snap and pick. Would recommend. You can key alike also and get all doors and french windows on same key. Keep your spare car and door keys in a key safe if you can also. |

I plan on having CCTV, a monitored house alarm, a tall fence and secured gate for access to the rear of my house and a drive post. I might get a tracker but I want to put in the preventative measures first. Hope these should prevent those looking for an easy car to nick. |

Have CCTV on the house and plan to install dashcams, but have no intention to fit a Tracker device, I don't want the car recovered in the event of someone stealing it.
I'd rather let GAP help out my insurance.

The gadget lover part of me does like the idea of a Tracker, and also the part of me that just doesn't want to let someone get away with my stuff, but I am tending towards this way of thinking.

I enquired about the Ghost System recently and a local fitter quoted £399.00 fitted. From the video on you tube and the info it's looks very good. You can programme between 4 and 20 presses of the existing buttons in the car to form a personal combination. It also comes with Valet more and can be turned off for servicing. Apparently it's coded to the Can Data (not sure what that is) but it's a small box that's hidden in the car and draws milliamps from the Battery. I spoke to the sales guy who put me in touch with the local fitting company and he said its big in Russia by only available in UK since January 2016. I would definitely consider, however I'm not sure if this would affect the warranty. Having said that the fitters told me that if BMW had an issue and wouldn't carry out any warranty work then they would disconnect and refit again after the work was done. Obviously there would be a charge for that. I'm going to ask the question of BMW next week when my car goes for service to see if it does affect the warranty...I'll update once I know.

Snap safe locks a must and keys in an alarmed area of the house, talking from experience.

Basic but effective. Physical deterrents eg stoplock etc. Just make sure they can't nor easily removed.
Personally use the Bullock T stoplock on the pedals. Down in the footwell so difficult for any scrote to attack plus you can't press the brake pedal to start the car Wouldn't get a tracker again as no massive insurance saving and as you said to you want the car back. Many years ago used to have a paging alarm which could be used without a siren. Apparently declared illegal due to the frequency it used but could alert you upto a mile away Guy who was selling them told me if an incident where his went off so he picked up a metal bar and on investigating found a scrotes arse hanging out of the window - Apparently fixed his haemoroids got him !!!!!

I pretty much have the above and Garage door defenders. Lots of visual deterents. . I don't live in a high crime area but 2 summers ago we had 8 houses done in 2 weeks in August while folks were on holiday. Plus the council now wants to turn off street lights to save money...which is a bonus if your a criminal. Very helpful. |

Not with those threads! Was a really interesting discussion I thought and was really curious to see what folk thought. Actually you can still see that folk are mainly beefing up home security first and foremost.

Small things add up. I have as mentioned ABS euro cylinders or the top Yale ones quite a bit more pricey than the basic. Plus PAS24 hoppe handles, combined with sash jammers.
Alarm and a IP camera I hope we are not as much as a target! |
