Bike rack options - Saris Bones?

Torn between what to do, it would be used every/ most weekends for carrying 2 MTBs.

I'm thinking of going for the Saris Bones rear carrier, it's only around £90. Any experience with this? I guess it would cover the reg plate, are the brake lights still visible though?

The towbar and electrics option works out pretty expensive altogether, but would be the nicest option.

The roofrack would be an option, but I do a lot of mileage and I've heard it adds to windnoise and is bad for MPG. I guess they aren't something that can be removed easily?

Thoughts?

Everyone will tell you to put them on the roof or towbar.

I don't have those options (box gets in way on roof and no towbar) and its infrequent so not spending the money on a towbar.

The Octavia forum said the Bones RS is the best fit for not knackering things and holds the bikes high enough to not mask the plate or lights.

I've got one, but won't be using it on the 3er but on the Octavia, but not tried it yet as wont need it till end of next month, but certainly looks up to the job, I'm sure if it works on the Octy estate it would also on the 3er.

Go for the towbar.
iirc my 3rd party detachable Witter towbar and electrics cost me £370 supplied and fitted.

roof rack is the next best option but will cost you a 25% fuel penalty, is noisy and you will trash your bikes and car roof if you forget they are on the top and drive under a low barrier

in my opinion, the least attractive option is a rack such as Saris bones etc

I did exactly that. Wrote off a bike and caused significant damage to my (wife's) car.

Towbar from now on!

Rear mounted racks suck. Can damage your car, have flappy straps that keep getting loose and can limit access to the boot.

I've always carried mine on roof bars/rack.

All the ones that strap onto the car all look a bit Heath Robinson IMO, and all look like they'd mark the paintwork in some way or other.
