Noisy diesel ?

It might just be me but I think my 330d is getting louder. It's now on 19k miles

If I drive with a light throttle around town as I accelerate from low speed (5 - 30mph) the engine sound seems to rattle like an old diesel van, if I press the throttle harder so the get up & go is quicker the noise seems to disappear. If the window is open and you drive past buildings you can hear it as well. I've also noticed a pronounced hiss sound with the window open when accelerating briskly... anyone else have this or am I being paranoid?

Also seem to have a slight whine from the gearbox in reverse, especially when cold is this also normal as I haven't really noticed it before.

Any thoughts welcomed.

My engine sounded louder when I had a cracker EGR cooler....common issue. Are you smelling fumes?

Not that I have noticed. Maybe I'll get that checked out - maybe my hissing sound is actually a sucking sound? Thanks

If you are on 19k miles is it just coming up to it's first service/oil change? If it's still on the original oil that could be having an effect perhaps?

Nisfan mentioned this before, mine is sounding very diesel like on idle, and I have the diesel fume smell in the cabin. I can hear what I though was pronounced turbo whistle as well, but I dont remember it being this loud before.

The car is in with BMW on Tuesday for them to look at it, but I assume its the EGR part that is mentioned above.

Both of the ones I had got louder over time too. What you're describing is what I've noticed across 5 different 330Ds pre and post LCI. I wouldn't worry about it.

Hissing is turbo boosting and whining in reverse is common across all cars I've ever driven and is because they're usually straight cut gears not helical.

Was serviced at 14K next one due in 10K, so oil should still be fresh

Thanks for that, I'll take today as a benchmark and monitor it. In fairness the whining is very slight & you have to listen closely to hear it, but again just something I didn't notice before. Anyway spend most of the time going forward

OK so maybe the diesel fume smell is an issue, and the rest is in my head.

I can't say mine is any louder at 80k miles than it was when spanking.

Straight cut gears in a planetary gearset auto box? That is a new one.

Absolutely yes in a manual.

Could be worth 2 or 3 tank fills with ultimate or vpower? Just to see if it improves?

Interesting reading this. Mine has become a lot noisier at idle recently, much more of a rattle from the front than before. I just assumed that it was because the next service is due ion 3K. It sounds a lot more like a diesel than I remember.

I agree, that's why I thought to raise it...couple of tanks of ultimate... never thought of that..... actually my last few have been Tesco diesel seeing as its.99p/litre... maybe that's something to do with it !??

It's been talked to death on here about whether better fuel makes a difference or not, all I know is it did for mine so I don't use Tesco anymore

I had exactly the same issue at about the same mileage. A bottle of Red-X injector cleaner sorted it for me.

I sold a 330d after 2 months of ownership (used car with 9k miles on it) because of clatter on light throttle. The issue I think is the pressure spike when combustion starts. It's worse at low boost pressures and is exacerbated I think by piston slop which is why diesel engines get noisier as they get older. I think all the BMW 3.0 diesels do it to some degree but some seem worse than others. Many don't hear it or it doesn't bother them, but others (e.g. me!) find it grates after a while. For me, it had to go!

The hiss is the turbo. It is normal. It's why your car goes like the clappers. For me, the dieselly sound is apparent around 1500-1800 rpm. It is louder in cold weather and before the engine reaches full temp. It's also louder with supermarket diesel.

Mmmm... interesting, I think we are in the same camp, found myself searching for 335i's yesterday. It seemed OK when I first got it 9k miles but recently it's starting to get on my wick! Like the power but hate the noise.

I hadn't expected the his to be so pronounced, my last 2010 C350d Merc didn't hiss at all.
I think I'll rag it around this weekend to use up the tank of Tesco diesel i've just put in and try the ulitmate stuff to see how or if it improves.
