Noisy diesel ?
It might just be me but I think my 330d is getting louder. It's now on 19k miles
If I drive with a light throttle around town as I accelerate from low speed (5 - 30mph) the engine sound seems to rattle like an old diesel van, if I press the throttle harder so the get up & go is quicker the noise seems to disappear. If the window is open and you drive past buildings you can hear it as well. I've also noticed a pronounced hiss sound with the window open when accelerating briskly... anyone else have this or am I being paranoid? Also seem to have a slight whine from the gearbox in reverse, especially when cold is this also normal as I haven't really noticed it before. Any thoughts welcomed. |

Nisfan mentioned this before, mine is sounding very diesel like on idle, and I have the diesel fume smell in the cabin. I can hear what I though was pronounced turbo whistle as well, but I dont remember it being this loud before.
The car is in with BMW on Tuesday for them to look at it, but I assume its the EGR part that is mentioned above. |

Both of the ones I had got louder over time too. What you're describing is what I've noticed across 5 different 330Ds pre and post LCI. I wouldn't worry about it.
Hissing is turbo boosting and whining in reverse is common across all cars I've ever driven and is because they're usually straight cut gears not helical. |

Straight cut gears in a planetary gearset auto box? That is a new one. Absolutely yes in a manual. |

Interesting reading this. Mine has become a lot noisier at idle recently, much more of a rattle from the front than before. I just assumed that it was because the next service is due ion 3K. It sounds a lot more like a diesel than I remember.

It's been talked to death on here about whether better fuel makes a difference or not, all I know is it did for mine so I don't use Tesco anymore

I sold a 330d after 2 months of ownership (used car with 9k miles on it) because of clatter on light throttle. The issue I think is the pressure spike when combustion starts. It's worse at low boost pressures and is exacerbated I think by piston slop which is why diesel engines get noisier as they get older. I think all the BMW 3.0 diesels do it to some degree but some seem worse than others. Many don't hear it or it doesn't bother them, but others (e.g. me!) find it grates after a while. For me, it had to go!

The hiss is the turbo. It is normal. It's why your car goes like the clappers. For me, the dieselly sound is apparent around 1500-1800 rpm. It is louder in cold weather and before the engine reaches full temp. It's also louder with supermarket diesel.
