best resolution option for idrive video?

Hi,

Just started to look into this and would appreciate some help. The idrive professional media screen is wider than 16:9 - its 1280x480 I think. So if I'm taking blurays that I've ripped, which are 1920x1080, what is the best way to reencode them for storing on USB for playback in the car?

If I encode at 1280x720 - maintaining the original aspect ratio, will the idrive screen crop the top and bottom, or will it put bars on the sides to show the entire image? Do I have to crop it myself?

trying to figure this out because some movies that are eg 2.35:1 I'd want to be cropped, because otherwise you'd have bars all the way round. But for 16:98 movies (and TV shows), I wouldn't want them cropped, and black bars on the sides would be ok.

That leads onto one other point - if you are playing something back, can you still use split mode to have eg a map view live while passengers are watching something on the larger screen?

edit: ok, tried a couple of short tests.

- 16:9 content plays with black bars left and right. So blurays that are naturally letterboxed (eg 2.35:1) will have bars all the way round, and I can't see a menu option for zooming in which is disappointing
- You can still use splitscreen, I had it with a map on the right hand side. The left side seems roughly 16:9 so the video didn't look to be cropped at all. A letterboxed movie would look tiny though.
- couldn't get the 2.35:1 sample to play, but it was .mkv format. Thought they were ok but maybe the audio is wrong? Does it have problems with DTS or DD5.1 audio? Lots of my movies don't have stereo tracks as backup. I hope it doesn't require the video to be 16:9 format.

thanks - remembered that thread from a while ago but couldn't find it.

It doesn't say what the best way to encode is though - it sounds like you have to use the encoding program to crop the black bars and make a native 1280x480 to get full screen.

I just tried another test with a wider aspect ratio movie which was 1920x770 and that almost filled the full width of the screen.
