Real HP rating of the 35i engine and has it changed?

Was driving home yesterday on a dual carriage way and a M135 cruises up behind me and follows me for a bit, and then blast past. As an ex M135 owner I thought this could be interesting opportunity to see How my 435 compares. When I got the 435 the butt dyno seemed to confirm that the 435 was not as quick as my M135, however as the miles have rolled on the 435 has really matured and with 7k in the clock it is opening up nicely.

So back to yesterday when I caught up with the m135 we reached a roundabout i knew what he was going to do ( I did it enough when I had the M135) so thought I would play to. What did surprise me however was I had to back off as i was gaining on him. What I was expecting was for him to pull away a bit. I know he was trying because he had slowed to let me catch up for the rab, obviously I only let this experiment run to a sensible margin of the speed limit and he didn't push much further either. Sitting a bit further back in the traffic was a E92 M3 who decided he wanted to play to. Recognising I had brought a knife to a gun fight I sat the next round out but the M135 seemed game. So at the next rab sure enough the M135 accelerates hard but like a lamb to the slaughter the m3 was glued to his bumper. Anyway that's beside the point of my post.

It has made me wonder what the true HP of the latest 3/435i really is. Over on baby BMW it seems the m lite dyno's and bit more than BMW claims, and BMW figures suggest my car should be slower than an m135 but it wasn't. Has anybody had theirs on a dyno recently?

If you had the MPPK, then your 435i would be faster from 0-60 and in the 1/4 mile vs the stock M135i.

If not, then it should be even according to some car reviews.

Smaller lighter car with more power is clearly going to be faster, but not by much, I doubt he was trying that hard if you were catching him, I know my 435i felt slower at mid revs than the M135i

Manual or auto, your car and his (you wouldn't know I guess)? but can make a huge difference.

Pretty certain he was trying. The less power bigger car is what had me suprised. It was an older m135 but could have been manual

An older manual M135i would be about the same as an auto 435i, I can't really speak about a PWG M135i as I've never driven one, my M135i had a EWG which gave it the same power as an M235i and it was an auto

Maybe, just maybe, driver ability was lacking in the chap in front? Even though it does sound like a straight punt out of the rab. So many rab's you talk about, are you in MK?

Type of fuel may be a factor.

Are the 335i and 340i drivers filling with BP Ultimate of Shell equivalent? Do they make any noticeable difference?

There are a few variables as have been mentioned, also don't forget not all engines are equal. Mileage, how it was run in, even engine build and sensor tolerances all have an impact on performance.

Interesting comment, I feed mine pretty much exclusively on shell V Power however the last fill up ( as it was running fairly low and I didn't have time to drive across town to the shell station) was Tesco 99.

BP Ultimate does, it gives you less performance than the car is rated at.

Most of the commuting rallies boil down to appetite for risk rather than actual car performance.
Hence all the "my 3xx is faster than a Golf R" threads

If you go on the Golf R forum you'd think the R was the quickest car on the road. They beat M3's both old and new to name but a few.

Much be a bunch of risk takers.

97, IIRC the manual will state that the performance figures are based upon using 98.

If you're going to pay more for fuel you might as well get 99 V power.
