What is the culprit? Auto/Steptronic or Throttle Response?

I've notice when cruising at about 40 mph (5th or 6th gear - 1,500 rpms) that if I give it just a little throttle, the tach blips up about 200 to 300 rpms, falls immediately back down to 1,500 and then starts to accelerate. It happens pretty fast but it just seems odd to me. I'm used to the manual Z I traded in - is this normal for a stock 335i auto and if so, what's the cause?

Edit: It may only pop up about 100-200 rpms before falling, then the power comes in an she accelerates...

Hmm....I hadn't noticed. Most of the time I'm in DS hanging on to the wheel with both hands and eyes on the road. No time to look at the tach cuz SSTT pins you hard to the seat!

Hmmmm I had that same problem, but after installing the Forge DV's the throtte response for on and off throttle seems to be seamless!!

Thanks to all. Just went on a drive and to clarify - this happens mainly when I am completely off the throttle and then quickly give it a tap and hold for a little gas. Rpms blip, fall slightly and hold with a little acceleration. This is most noticeable while cruising in 6th/M6. If its not too much trouble, and you can do it SAFELY, would any of you auto guys mind checking this out sometime? My main concern is that my torque converter was replaced in December and I want to make sure I'm not being paranoid before I return it to the dealer. I sure would appreciate it.

I will test this out in the morning for you and get back to you. What mph were you at roughly?

Thanks man. Roughly around 35 - 40 mph. Should be around of 1500 - 1700 rpms in 6th or at least it is for me.

Yeah, it's the convertor locking up. Completely normal. When you let off the gas the convertor unlocks, then when you roll back into the gas the convertor locks back up dropping the rpm.

The way BMW locks up the convertors on the E90's almost immediately once the car starts moving from a dead stop is the main reason these new steps are so nice. It makes them actually feel like a manual trans.

I don't know about that but ever since i installed my forge DV's that response from the sudden gas after letting go of the throttle has almost totally disappeared...

Nothing conclusive really. I am going to take a different route to work tomorrow with less traffic (longer though), and test it out. I will report back here around 10am when I am out at the clients....

Thanks, I have heard that the TQ convertor locks up around 1500rpms from a dead stop. But just to make sure I understand your statement - you're then saying that while the car is cruising and the driver lets off the gas, the convertor will unlock. Then when getting back on the gas, it locks up again while cruising?

So now I'm a little worried. Just drove the 135i and didn't get the same results. Any thoughts as to what's wrong with my ride?
