My wife managed to lock the key in our UK E92.....

.....along with our 18 month old daughter!!!

I didn't think it was possible to do this?!?!

A search suggests it shouldn't be possible - my wife had placed the keys on the rear centre console and then went around the other side to put our 5 year old in but the door fell shut and the entire car locked.

I ended up having to run (breathlessly walk really quickly) for 15 mins up to the school with a hammer.

Surprisingly whacking the window with the decent sized hammer didn't smash it, but I was trying to avoid showering my little one with glass.

I ended up pulling the top of the window back an inch or so (surprisingly easily) - in the end I had covered the back of the window with my jacket and pulled back with the claw hammer until it smashed.

Unfortunately my car only came with one key, and 18 months on I've still not managed to get around to buying a spare.

To top it all, my wife's Kia Sorento needs a new Aircon compressor, which is why she had my car.

I'm surprised at this happening as well. Try as I might to lock my car with comfort access... i can't lock my doors with the key fob in the cabin area by accident.

The real question is, why would you close your door while you leave your child in the car (granted it is the wife that did it)? While i do trust electronics... I never leave my own kid in the car without some fully open window or an ajar door until I get my kid out of the parked car. Get your car coded for all the cool features so you can just hold the lock button or the handle for it to roll up all your windows and sunroof when locking and you should be fine.

You should always have a spare key (if not the fob... then at least a spare key blade made for $30). The important thing is your wife and kid are safe...

Go get two or three spare key blades made (leave one on each parent and one in the home in a safe place).

I have had better Mondays....

My daughter was starting to get panicked in the back after 30mins stuck inside, otherwise I would have had a go fishing it out with a length of wire.

All I'd brought with me was a hammer though.....

So how the hell could this have happened?

In my wife's defense she was struggling to put our daughter in the car seat in the rear of a coupe - not the easiest thing to do - and she'd put the keys down briefly so she could use both hands. She didn't mean to close the door, it fell shut as the car was parked half on the kerb (sidewalk).

Effing 18 month-olds are completely useless! No useful skills, whatsoever. Which is why I'll never have another one.

I think its worth keeping receipts of the repair and ALSO contacting BMW of the UK. I don't know if I would contact the cops... they might give you more headache than help on this matter. Also contact whatever national road authority you guys have out there... like we have the NHTSA here in the USA. They might issue a recall or investigate this issue on your car to see if it IS ACTUALLY an edge/corner test case that they missed. I would have your wife document as many fine details as she can about what happened step by step ASAP, because memory is something that tends to forget key details over time. Actually if you can post up what she did in as much pain-staking detail as possible... I can see if I can reproduce it on my car. BMW on North America is not more than a couple hours drive from me... I can stop by and show them

That's a crazy story mate. You should put on your best ManU jersey, go to your local BMW dealer, and go ape sh*t on them. They'll think you're a hooligan and pay you mad $$$ for the damage. All joking aside, I'm glad you're child is safe. I would have done the same if my child was locked inside.

I make mechanical "service" keys at my Lock shop all the time for BMW's. No, it won't start the car, but for $25 it'll unlock the door or trunk (if you have a trunk lock). Much cheaper than a lockout service and its nice peace of mind.

Small enough to fit in your wallet. Hit up any competent lock shop and have them cut you one!

A couple years ago my wife was loading the kids and dog in my old car and laid the keys on the front seat. Door closed and the dog stepped on the remote lock button. Spare key was locked in the house. After a couple minutes of my wife trying to figure out what to do, the dog stepped on the remote's unlock button. Disaster averted.

I always leave a door or window open when the kids are in the car. If I need to close a door I'll open another door first. But my oldest kid can now let herself out, and the younger probably can.

This... I'm super anal about making sure that i don't depend on the electronics because i know they will fail at the worst possible time.

Ha well you shouldn't drive a BMW, literally everything is controlled by electronics. It could set your airbags off, disable you're steering and brakes and straight up ruin your day.

Difference between use and depend. Somethings you really can't avoid now a days is drive-by-wire and the like... but what I can control, I do.

Does the "BMW Remote" smartphone app not work for your car?

I was not aware of an app - my car is from 2007, was it available then?
