Eccentric Shaft Sensor - gasket question?

Doing a ESS replace and decided to yield to one You Tube which stated to wait until you've gotten the VC installed and then "knocking" the gasket in over the ESS with a large socket....sounded good at the time but (for me) it didn't work..I've distorted the gasket so much trying I'm giving up and picking up a new gasket tomorrow at the dealer and and then I'm going to put it in the cover first ....

Of course, I've removed the cover after having tourqed it down and guess now I get to throw my brand new bolts away and use new ones...(comments/agree/disagree) ...ok to use my new VC gasket or having tourqed it down does it need to be replaced (I don't think so on this one)?

And finally, how the heck do you get the ESS gasket in the VC???

Seems it almost needs to be pressed in but I know that's not the answer...anyone that's done this or does this for a living PLEASE advise..
I do have the aluminum-magnesium cover.

Thanks to all responses.
